Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Talk:Greater Armenia (political concept). Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

Orphaned non-free media (File:WADA logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:WADA logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:20, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:KGHY logo.png, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Anti-replay, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Protocol and Packet (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Helpme

I am a frequent reader/browser/learner on Wikipedia, but am having trouble getting my head around the editing guidelines and the technical requirements for being an active contributor.

I am not interested in article creation. I don't wish to waste my time fighting back & forth over "the real facts" with other users. I just want to do something to make the site better.

What opportunities are available to me? How do I become involved?

Thank you to the kind person who finds this "help me" request. I appreciate the time you took to respond to me.

Welcome to Wikipedia. I will leave the "helpme" because others may have more specific suggestions, but you could look at the "Help out" section on Wikipedia:Community portal. I will also add below this a Welcome template with some useful links. JohnCD (talk) 10:06, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I reordered and restructured this a bit, hope you don't mind. In addition to what John suggested above and below, you can also help out by doing some ground-level content work. For example, you could read Wikipedia:Citing sources and then check some articles in Category:Unreferenced BLPs and add sources when you find them on Google News or somewhere else. Since those are unsourced, there is no real chance of having to "fight back & forth" with other users and you can simply leave the article again after you added the source. Even if you add it incorrectly or inconsistently with the manual of style, it is still a huge benefit to the project. The only hard thing is to be able to simply ignore an article after you edited it once ;-) I'll leave the helpme for others to find. Regards SoWhy 15:20, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, I believe the easiest way to get involved would be to just start editing. Pick a topic you know something about, have a source for, or feel is poorly covered on Wikipedia, and add to it. The easiest way to get involved is to start to contribute in small ways and I believe if you do this more opportunities will become available/apparent to you. You may also want to look at this, it may give you some ideas. Again I suggest you find something you think needs fixin' and have at it (As Larry Sanger once said "Be Bold"). Hope this helps,  Adwiii  Talk  22:55, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Typo correction

Here is one more specific suggestion, which is the way I started (centuries ago, it seems) to get regularly involved: typo correction. See WP:TYPO. The list at WP:LCM gives links to common mis-spellings, and the search facility lets you find articles that use them. That shows you a wide variety of articles, helps make Wikipedia look more professional, and is not so trivial a task as it seems: for instance, beware of British/US variant spellings, which should not be arbitrarily changed (both are used, and the principle is to be consistent within an article), and also beware of correcting spellings within a direct quotation. JohnCD (talk) 11:05, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

  • My own first edit was removing an apostrophe that didn't belong there. Then I made a few replacements of words with what seemed to me to be plainer English (e.g. replacing "solution" with "product"). As time went by i found more and more little details that I could correct, such as an article which referred to a particular fictional character as being from a TV show, whereas the character originally came from books, later televised. I don't think that originally I expected ever to any more than these minor corrections, but as time went by I gradually found more and more that I felt like being involved in. I am not suggesting that you have to follow the same path, but there is a lot to be said for starting in a very small way, so that you can learn gently, without finding yourself getting into conflicts, and having your work reverted. I find that editors who start in small ways are much more likely to finish up making useful contributions than those who try to jump in right from the start to do big things. Anyway, whatever you choose to do, welcome, and I hope you succeed in finding some role for yourself in contributing to this great project. JamesBWatson (talk) 16:03, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

The referenced work with the "invalid ISBN" is a two-volume hardcover book. The ISBN given in the reference exactly matches the one printed in both volumes. Whatever the "correct" ISBN might be, it doesn't appear in the book. --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:50, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Would you consider 9784938163303 acceptable? —Senator2029 (talk) 16:31, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

I don't know. A web search for that ISBN turns up only one other site using it for that publication. It also pulls up a Japanese site that associates it with a manga series. Without stronger evidence, I couldn't say. --EncycloPetey (talk) 16:53, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

You can center almost anything

by typing it between <center> and </center>.

Assessment assistance

Just as a general disclaimer, I'm involved with the History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia project. :) One of our goals is to improve the quality of Australian Paralympian related articles. We're actively working on improving these and trying to get contributors to help. :) A complete list of articles is found at Book talk:Australian Paralympians. It would be really awesome if you could look at these articles, determine if the assessment is correct, or of the article should be higher or lower. (I've self-assessed some of these articles and need a check.) Some articles are listed as stubs that I think technically could be starts, but I'm not certain and don't want to do that on my own on a large scale. If you have the time, it would be fantastic if you could offer one or two lines of feedback about what it would take to get the article to the next assessment level. (Needs more content. Needs sources. A B that could be nominated for GA. Needs sections. Do you have a picture? Article box not complete. That sort of simple assessment.) Any help doing that would be really, really appreciated. :) --LauraHale (talk) 04:02, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

I have made changes, though I'm not sure what changes you were expecting really. Looking at the text, I didn't see anything really wrong with it. Tilt

I'm just interested to know why, in particular, the article for Tilt needs copy editing and whatnot? There are hundreds of thousands of album articles with less detail (and some being very badly written), but they merely get stub tags. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 23:23, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Glad you asked! It doesn't need any copy editing, but does need attention to the way the columns/table/templates are spaced on the page. I used {{Spacing}} because of the way that infoboxes and {{Track listing}} were causing a layout/page formatting problem. After reading the relevant template documentation and help pages, I tried making some changes without any success. Therefore, I wanted to bring it to someone's attention for assistance. Perhaps I chose the wrong template, as this one auto-categorizes into Category:All articles needing copy edit. Any help or feedback you can provide is most welcome. Senator2029 (talk) 23:49, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
I really can't see what the problem is. The syntax looks absolutely fine to me, and I've seen thousands of album articles with the same layout. Sounds more like a browser issue to me, rather than something that needs a big ol' tag. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 18:53, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

The file deletion notice was for File:1553b fig 10 Data bus interface using direct coupling.JPG (Figure 10 on the page), but I accidentally place it under Figure 9. Thanks for taking in interest in the page I created. There was a link made to my name but no wiki page so I made one. I am trying to link as many different sources of information to verify its contents as possible. Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

Thanks

CSD notification

The page The Bluford Series looks like it may be a valid CSD, but I prefer not to delete a page unless the creator has been notified. I understand that sometimes automated tools fail to do the notification for some reason. Not sure if that was the case, but could you make the notification?SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:02, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Doing... Yes, I will do that. Thank you for asking me; it helps me understand the process better. Senator2029talk 13:48, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
YesY Done – Twinkle did the notification to Chocogurl252. But I have now also left a notice for User talk:99.97.140.176 who is the the contributor of the copied text. Senator2029talk 14:35, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Tancred Page

Hi Senator,

sorry about that. It was actually my first wikipedia edit and I didn't really know how to do it. In fact, that page is very incomplete and as I am writing my undergraduate thesis on Tancred of Hauteville, I thought I would have a look at it. Unfortunately then I didn't have time to do anything other than delete a bit that quoted as certain a very uncertain source. I will keep your kind advice in mind for future entries. :)

Thank you! Best, Hellis — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hellis99 (talkcontribs) 17:27, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Gideons color circle logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading File:Gideons color circle logo.gif.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 05:01, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Talkheader

The documentation has recently changed to allow {{Talk header}} to be placed on even quiet talkpages, so there is no longer a need to remove it. The thinking is that the template provides advice and encouragement to new and inexperienced users, which is in line with the Foundation's aim to get more feedback from all users. SilkTork ✔Tea time 20:56, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

When you say "the documentation has recently changed" what actually happened was you unilaterally decided to change the documentation. Sure, to give the appearance of disucssion, you posted on the talk page, but you only allowed for less than 24 hours discussion. Further, I was only notified after you changed the documentation. So in addition to us now discussing the merits of making these changes to the documentation, I must ask why you, as an experienced editor (who should know better), acted hastily and without consensus? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Franz Bardon, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Matrix and Sigil (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Senator2029. I'm dropping you a note because you used to (or still do!) patrol new pages. This is just to let you know that we've deployed and developed Page Curation, which augments and supersedes Special:NewPages - there are a lot of interesting new features :). There's some help documentation here if you want to familiarise yourself with the system and start using it. If you find any bugs or have requests for new features, let us know here. Thanks! Arab Lobby

Hi there, thanks very much for your friendly message and advice regarding my edits to The Arab Lobby: The Invisible Alliance That Undermines America's Interests in the Middle East. I am no Middle East expert myself but I saw that there was no article for the book. I took an interest in the Israel and Arab lobbies, and the Christian Right from my university courses and church life. Since its the summer holidays in New Zealand, I decided to give this article a try, taking a brief break from Wookieepedia. If you're interested in editing that article, feel free to help me. I'm willing to work with anyone regardless of their views. Cheers. Andykatib 09:29, 29th Nov 2012 (UTC)

Hand-coding

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:00, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Page curation error

Hi Senator, I'm guessing you used the new page curation tool without checking its results closely? You recently applied a tag to an article that wasn't accurate at all, which I think is something to be avoided, as it misleads Wikipedia readers, as well as being rather discouraging to the author of a new article. Please see

RE: Anterior surface of the heart

Hi. I can see that you left a message for me about categorising a redirect, anterior surface of the heart. You are absolutely right such redirect should be categorised. I am currently working on getting a bot to do this, since I already made a couple of thousinds from Latin terms to anatomical articles. Sorry. They will be categorised within a week or so and a heads up: I will make about 300 more (then I am at the end of my list) before they are categorised within {{WPMED|class=redirect}} and {{WPAN|class=redirect}}. Thank you for paying attention and reviewing articles. --JakobSteenberg (talk) 02:07, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
