Fantasy football history

[edit]

Hi there, Smfrank1.

I see that you recently restored the paragraph I removed regarding a fantasy league started in the 1980's at Marist High School in Georgia. Based on your username and edit history, I'm willing to guess that you were one of the original members of that league, and I'd like to raise some concerns I had with this paragraph. Firstly, many of the claims in the paragraph are not cited, and the only citation in the paragraph is incomplete, as it references the Atlanta Journal & Constitution in general rather than a specific article. Secondly, I do have questions about the relevance of the information you've added. It seems like the league has a lot of personal importance to you, but I'm not sure if certain specific details (e.g. a list of all of the league's founding members) are relevant to a member of the general public. In the interest of not starting an edit war, I feel that fair to give you a chance to weigh in on the edit. Perhaps we could come to some sort of compromise. --Puhala,ny (talk) 20:54, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to respond to the comment from Puhala, ny that was posted on my User talk page. They don't have a User talk page. What is the best way to respond? (Smfrank1 (talk) 01:30, 6 November 2020 (UTC))[reply]

First, you are allowed to create user talk pages, but that has already been done at User talk:Puhala,ny.
Second, if someone opens a conversation on your talk page, it's generally considered good practice to keep the conversation there (unless there's a decidedly good reason why the conversation should be taking place elsewhere, such as on the talk page of the relevant article). You can notify Puhala,ny by using one of the various {{reply|username}} templates in your response or by mentioning them as a link in your edit summary. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 03:03, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reaching out, and I am happy to answer your questions. Firstly, there is a specific article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 in Section C (Sports) on page 1 titled " Marist School Students Were Fantasy Football Pioneers", and I appreciate you helping me get the citation properly listed. Secondly, yes, I was an original member of the league, and we are very proud of this accomplishment. We also believe it is very relevant and important to show the development of Fantasy Football since there was no FFL on the East Coast until 1983, and the FFL did not go national until 1985. Also, since it was a group of high school students, we think it is significance to include the members' names. Once you removed my original paragraph, I went back and reduced it by about 50% as a compromise. What do you suggest as a reasonable compromise? {{reply|Puhala,ny}} ((Smfrank1 (talk) 23:55, 6 November 2020 (UTC)))[reply]

@Smfrank1: Thank you for your reply. I found the article you referenced online, and I see that it supports the claims you made in the paragraph. I do acknowledge that your replacement did remove a lot of unnecessary information, which I should have pointed out in my original message. Since you provided a specific article, my proposal would be to pretty much just add inline citations to what's already there. As for listing the league members, while I still disagree regarding the significance, I think a fair compromise would be to include the original league members only. I did reword it some, but the exact wording isn't particularly important. Here's what I propose:
In 1983, the first East Coast rotisserie sports fantasy football league was formed at Marist School (Georgia) in Atlanta by seven high school students: Scott Frank, Frankie Doherty, Mark Wesley, Glenn Gilbertti, Chris Decherd, Jay Dowlen, Gil Markham, and Chris Daniel.[1] In the early days of the league, before ESPN was broadcast nationwide and statistics were available on the Internet, league members would call TNT basketball sportscaster and Marist School graduate Ernie Johnson Jr., then working at WSB-TV in Atlanta, to receive statistical updates from Sunday games before the box scores appeared in Monday newspapers.[1] The league remains in continuous operation, with two of the original members continuing to participate into the 2020s.[1]
Let me know what you think. In the meantime, I appreciate you getting back to me. After reading the AJC article, I have a greater appreciation for your league's historical significance. Puhala,ny (talk) 02:43, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate you taking the time to read the article, your kind words, and coming back with a compromise. It is a tough decision since the others played important roles in the early years. However, with the goal of getting this resolved, we accept your proposal. Please revise the paragraph per your proposal to make sure it is done properly. Thank you. {{reply|Puhala,ny}} ((Smfrank1 (talk) 22:27, 8 November 2020 (UTC)))[reply]

@Smfrank1: Sounds good. I'm glad we could talk this out.Puhala,ny (talk) 15:49, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
