Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, with more than 32 million views a day. However, only 18.23% of the English-language biographies are about women. The stats for ethnic and racial minorities and scientists who identify as LGBTQ+ are no better. With a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion, we will work together to research, write, and improve the biographies of gender, ethnic, and racial minorities working in optics and photonics.

    What to expect

    [edit]

This will be a relaxed evening with training plus time for discussion, discoveries, and questions. There will be experienced Wikipedians present to help newcomers get started. Join us in editing Wikipedia pages about inspiring women, ethnic, or racial minority scientists. This event is open to the public, and no previous experience is needed.

Participate in any way that's comfortable for you. Bring your curiosity and questions; it's ok to just drop by to check things out. Bring your laptop, tablet, power cord if you want to edit Wikipedia. Ideas for articles that need updating or creation are welcome, too. Stop by for a short while or stay for two hours.

It would be helpful if create a Wikipedia account (instructions here) before you arrive. If you are unfamiliar with Wikipedia, check out this training module which helps explain many dimensions of the Wikipedia universe.

The main goals of the event are:

    • to have fun and learn something
    • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by improving/creating biographies
    • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on a specific area
    • to support Wikipedia in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women, women's works, and women's issues
    • to promote new/improved articles and images through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter).
