User:IJA/Anti Poppy (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

This userbox is divisive, per Wikipedia:Userboxes#Content restrictions. The user asserts that the wearing of a poppy is a glorification of war, but there is no evidence presented to back this up. The wearing of a poppy for Remembrance Day is very emotive, and I feel this userbox is insensitive. Cloudbound (talk) 22:45, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The personal interest I have here in seeing that the userbox is deleted (or redesigned) is that it is insulting and inaccurate. However, I respect that we have differing opinions on this subject. Not everyone wearing a red poppy longs for the days where the world was at war. The wearing of a poppy is to remember those who died fighting in wars, hence why there is Remembrance Day. It is absolutely not done to glorify war. Cloudbound (talk) 23:11, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the top two results shown in the Google search you have linked to include the following quotes: "Ted Harrison: Remembrance was intended to be a pledge that war must never happen again. It must not glorify or sanitise war.", and, " Anyone who thinks that the poppy glorifies war does not understand what the poppy truly stands for." My thoughts exactly. • Comment I've changed the wording to make it more opinion orientated. This is something you should have requested from me in the first place instead of rushing to nominate it for deletion. It isn't insulting, it was your decision to be insulted by it; that was 100% your decision not mine. I could arguably say that I'm insulted by your Userpage. There are many userboxers on here which one could arguably find 'insulting' and 'inaccurate'. You just have to take a look at all the userboxes relating to Israel and Palestine. Anyway I've changed my infobox to make it clear that it is an Opinion, so please take this down for deletion before your deletion request fails. IJA (talk) 23:21, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you. You could say you are insulted by my userpage, but that would appear to be more retaliatory than anything else. If you'd been a little more careful with your wording originally, there would not have been any problem. Cloudbound (talk) 19:43, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
