From Proto-Indo-Iranian *wán- (tree, wood). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬥𐬁 (vanā, tree), Pashto ونه (wëna, tree), Sogdian wn (tree), Middle Persian [script needed] (wan /⁠wn'⁠/, tree).
