[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi वावदळ (vāvadaḷa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀮 (vaddala), from Sanskrit वार्दल (vārdala) (compare Hindi बादल (bādal), Gujarati વાદળ (vādaḷ) and Bengali বাদল (badol)), from वार्द (vārda, “water-giving; rain cloud”), a compound of वार् (vār, “water”) + द (da, “giving”); the first element is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *waHr- (“water; rain”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wer ~ *weh₁r- (“water, rain, flow”). Cognate with Persian باران (“rain”), بارش (whence Hindi बारिश (bāriś)), Ossetian уарын (waryn, “rain”), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭 (var, “rain”), Luwian 𒉿𒀀𒅈 (wār, “water”), Old Norse vari (“liquid, water”), Latvian jūra (“sea”), and Latin ūrīna (whence English urine), Avara.
