Borrowed from a Central Asian language during the Han Dynasty (Laufer, 1967). Compare Tibetan བུག་སུག (bug sug, alfalfa; bird's-foot trefoil), Ladakhi [script needed] (bukhsukh, Nepeta salviifolia, now Nepeta racemosa).
