The noun's meaning of "ant" is likely derived from the meaning "urine". Compare the semantics of English pissmire (“ant”) and the ant-related history of Sanskrit मधुमेह (madhumeh) (madhumēha "mead-urine"). Possibly related to Southern Yukaghir оожии (ōžī).
