From Proto-Vietic *k-taːk, from Proto-Austroasiatic *ktaat (to cluck), ultimately onomatopoeic. Cognates within Vietic include Muong [Hoà Bình] kuk⁸ taːk⁷, Tho [Cuối Chăm] kuk⁸ taːk⁷, Chut kutaːk⁷, and Arem kutæːk. Other cognates include Mon ကတတ် (to cluck, cackle), Nyah Kur [Northern] kǝták ("cackling (of a hen)"), Khmer ខ្តត (khtɑɑt, to cluck, cackle), Bahnar kơtak (cluck, cackle), Ngeq katoːc ("to crow; to cackle"), Semai kutok (to cackle, cluck (of a hen)), Cua takɔːt ("cackle of chicken").
