Mean Girls musical announces Broadway dates

Fresh off EW’s first look at the Plastics, the forthcoming stage musical Mean Girls has confirmed its grool Broadway plans following a try-out run at Washington, D.C.’s National Theatre this fall.

The show, based on Tina Fey’s 2004 high school comedy, will open on Broadway on April 8, 2018 at the August Wilson Theatre. Previews begin March 12, just over three months after the National run concludes in December. In addition to revealing the details of its Broadway burn book, the show also debuted its new key art:

Mean Girls arrives onstage with a book by Fey, music and lyrics by Jeff Richmond (30 Rock) and Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), and direction by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, and Paramount Pictures are producing the musical, which expands upon the movie’s story about a fish-out-of-water student and the three teenage tormentors she sets out to sabotage at the top of the high school hierarchy.

The principal cast includes Taylor Louderman, Ashley Park, and Kate Rockwell as Plastics trio Regina, Gretchen, and Karen; Erika Henningsen as Cady Heron; Barrett Wilbert Weed as Janis; Grey Henson as Damian; Kyle Selig as Aaron; Kerry Butler as Ms. Norbury; Cheech Manohar as Kevin Gnapoor; and Rick Younger as Mr. Duvall.

As Fey told EW, fans of Mean Girls “will hopefully find that [this musical] has the DNA of the movie and is true to the spirit of it, but is also opened up in a lot of ways. I feel like all the music in our show is very catchy — like, I feel like you will walk out humming several songs. The songs are what make the show.”
