🌹 International Women in Cyber Day 🌹 Let’s appreciate the women who we work with, and celebrate the women who have shaped our lives. Our industry thrives on innovation, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence—qualities embodied by female pioneers who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations. The narrative of technology is enriched by the achievements of women who thought differently and executed ingeniously, sometimes without due recognition (it’s a history-of-science crime that we all know Watson & Crick for the discovery of DNA, but not Rosalind Franklin). I’m reading Walter Isaacson’s “The Innovators” now, and it’s telling that the story of innovation begins with Ada Lovelace (daughter of Lord Byron), who re-imagined Babbage’s “analytical engine” into a form of artificial intelligence that would some day bridge the gap between science, technology, and art in the ways popularized by Steve Jobs and Apple. Grace Hopper, a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, revolutionized the world of computing by developing the first compiler, which transformed written language into machine code, and championed the development of COBOL, a prominent programming language. We’ve made strides towards inclusion but it’s a long road. According to the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), women represented 25% of the computing workforce in 2021. That imbalance can show up in everything from search engine bias to product design. In the realm of cybersecurity, the importance of female participation cannot be overstated. There is a talent gap in the industry that is running into the millions, and a need for solutions to complex problems that take the Ada Lovelace approach. According to (ISC)², the global cybersecurity workforce needs to grow 65% to effectively defend organizations’ critical assets. According to Cybersecurity Ventures, the percentage of women in the cybersecurity field has been on the rise, reaching 25% in 2022 after rising up from 20% in 2019 and just 11% in 2013. This uptick is encouraging, but by no means does it signify the finish line to the long road of women in technology. Inclusive teams are shown to be more innovative, more able to solve complex problems, and better at understanding the diverse needs of the customers they serve. By fostering an inclusive culture that encourages the participation of women at all levels, we can unlock new perspectives, ideas, and solutions that will propel our industry forward. 🌹 Happy international Women in Cyber day! Spear fishing is a style of fishing that targets a single fish — while this strategy doesn't cast a wide net (no pun intended), it can be more successful thanks to a dedicated focus on hooking a bigger fish. 🎣 In the same way, spear phishing attacks use hyper-personalized messages aimed at specific individuals or organizations, often high-ranking executives with greater access to sensitive information. While less common, roughly 50% of organizations fall victim to spear phishing every year. 😬 Making sure spear phishing simulations are a part of your security awareness training program can help prevent these types of attacks. Platforms like Hoxhunt automatically recognize who is most likely to receive spear phishing attacks (based on job role and seniority) and sends them simulations accordingly, so your biggest 'fish' stay vigilant against these tricky attacks.
