Flexibility is the blindspot in Africa’s clean energy transition. Solar and wind power are recognised as the foundation of Africa’s future energy systems due to their suitability for the continent’s unique conditions and cost-competitiveness. However, there needs to be more consensus on the best technologies to provide flexible power capacity. Researchers tend to focus on zero-carbon dispatchable technologies, ignoring the potential of balancing engine power plants, which are reliable, flexible, and cost-competitive. These power plants can support a realistic and cost-effective transition to clean energy in Africa. While climate action is important, the continent’s priority is to combat energy poverty and ensure a consistent electricity supply. The optimal power mix for most African nations is based on renewable energy as the new baseload, with balancing engine technologies and energy storage providing flexibility. Renewable energy will not deliver on its promises without a sound flexibility plan. How methanol engines are reducing emissions for Louis Dreyfus Armateurs Louis Dreyfus Armateurs plans to expand its existing Atlantic fleet with three new fuel-efficient RoRo cargo ships to lower emissions. The new vessels will each be powered by two dual-fuel Wärtsilä 32 methanol engines. Each vessel will also have six Norsepower Rotor Sails to reduce emissions further. The predicted emissions reductions are impressive: a reduction of CO2 emissions by 50% is expected by 2030 compared to 2023. #HotOffThePress - We are excited to announce that Wärtsilä has signed a contract with Norwegian shipowner Eidesvik Offshore ASA to supply the equipment for the conversion of an offshore PSV to operate with ammonia fuel. The vessel, ‘Viking Energy’, which is on contract to energy major Equinor, is scheduled for conversion in early 2026 and is expected to start operating on ammonia in the first half of 2026, becoming the world’s first ammonia-fuelled in-service ship. Wärtsilä will supply the engine and complete fuel gas supply system and exhaust after-treatment needed for the conversion, making it also the first vessel to use Wärtsilä’s recently released ammonia solution. With ammonia a promising alternative fuel for the shipping industry, as it looks for more sustainable fuel options, Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä, highlights the importance of cross-industry collaboration: “In just 25 years – the lifetime of a single vessel – shipping needs to get to net zero emissions. Achieving this will require coordinated action by all maritime industry stakeholders to bring about the system change needed to accept a new generation of sustainable fuels. “With this new contract, together with Eidesvik, Wärtsilä is proud to be at the forefront of this movement. We are proud of the long-lasting impact of our community-focused activities in South Africa. At the end of 2020, upon completing a customer job at the port of Cape Town, we donated four shipping containers that would be converted into soup kitchens, libraries, and training centres for underprivileged communities. We recently received feedback that one of those containers, initially used to upgrade a local food bank, is now a library and counselling centre providing adult education opportunities for the local community. 🫶 We are committed to supporting initiatives that create added value for our local communities, focusing on the welfare & sustainable development of the community at large.
