Why should people appoint an interior designer instead of managing their own project?

As a multi–International Award winning studio and having worked on over 130 homes throughout the UK and Europe over the course of 16 years, we have extensive knowledge of bringing homes together that truly reflect our clients individual tastes and personalities. We are fully trained and are highly skilled at reading spaces differently. We care about creating beautiful spaces and working with our clients, so your home becomes a hybrid of ideas to truly create something special together. We have extensive knowledge of materials, finishes, furniture, lighting design, bespoke joinery design, art and accessories. We offer a unique approach which is based primarily on two differentiating factors – First, I deal with each client and every design personally and I am involved creatively from the big picture to the details. Second, we are willing to listen and work with our clients and take them on a journey to ensure the whole design experience is one of fun and excitement as we develop ideas for your home together, with no in-house style, anything and everything is possible.

Clients using an interior designer allows them to tap into the wealth of trade suppliers and items / products not readily available to the public, we share the trade discounts and clients love to see visual savings throughout which are not ordinarily achieved and we take the headache away by handling all of the administration of orders up to the payment stage and contractor liaison to ensure products arrive on site on time. We find that by offering items at trade price plus a minimal handling fee offsets a large proportion of our design fees and it makes the process much more enjoyable for yourselves.

There is a substantial amount of design time required when designing a home and a vast amount

of drawing time to produce more detailed floor plan layouts, elevations, bespoke joinery design drawings, lighting plans, bathroom layouts, tile set out drawings etc, every detail needs to be drawn up in plan and elevation form. Once items are agreed we then produce Schedules for issue to the contractor, such as Lighting, Electrical, Bathroom Fittings, Flooring, Ironmongery, Window Treatments, Fabric, Wall Finishes etc. These schedules set out precise items to be used, product codes, image, description, technical know-how sheets, these are essential documents to ensure the smooth running of the project and to avoid costly delays / errors on site. Clients who have never carried out a project always underestimate the volume of work required to complete one room let alone a whole house, and they never understand the value of using a designer until we are brought in because they have become overwhelmed by the selections, administration and handling trade issues / decisions on site. Once they’ve used our services they never go back.

Who or what have been your major influences and role models?

Major influences have been life experiences over many years, people you see in day to day life, general business and just observing people. Experiencing a good service which you hope transcends into your own client and team relationships. We don’t have role models, we just soak up the good in day to day life and treat people well and we strive daily to do better and to get out there more, the more we see the more rounded we are as individuals and a team.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort?

Always a collaboration, you can’t design a home without listening to your clients individual needs, not one client is the same, how we all live is unique so we fully embrace working alongside clients to bring their dreams to life, we have more fun that way! We do of course offer a complete turn key service for our overseas clients.

Is there a project that you are most proud of?

It would be unfair to single out one project, we truly are blessed with incredible clients, repeat business and referrals and as our clients property portfolios grow they take us with them. Some projects are rewarding when we’re dealing with planning permissions and listed consents and how we approach and overcome those hurdles, some projects make us smile because clients have trusted us and believed in us from day one, there are so many joyous moments amongst the immense amounts of skill sets and plate spinning required on the job!

A little bit of history

Chelsea was originally just one manor house, acquired by Henry VIII in 1536 who installed two of his six queens: Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves. By the early 1700s the area was already popular with the wealthy and described as a ‘village of palaces’. Perhaps the most famous building is the Chelsea Royal Hospital for soldiers, which was built in 1682 at the request of Charles II by Christopher Wren. The Swinging Sixties era was defined on the King’s Road, while the Sloane Square area gave the term ‘Sloane Ranger’.

Why move to Chelsea?

Chelsea is synonymous with opulence: high-end shops and fine dining are what the world-famous King’s Road is best known for. It’s a great place to visit, and it’s also a fantastic place to live. Just two-and-a-half miles south west of central London, Chelsea has South Ken to the north, Pimlico to the east, the Thames and Battersea to the south and Fulham to the west: there’s no better place to be for enjoying the cultural and historical sights of the capital. There are few places more sought-after in central London than Chelsea – the district oozes exclusivity, but it’s also a real melting pot of different cultures.

Located on the River Thames, the neighborhood of Chelsea is absolutely gorgeous. It’s got historical buildings throughout and several of its streets are known around the world for their great shopping. The Albert Bridge has been called one of the most romantic places in the world, offering up a beautiful view of London. And the streets of Chelsea were once walked by the greatest musical artists of all time, including the Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

Today, this is an affluent enclave that is notable for having the largest community of Americans expats living in London. There are many housing options, ranging from stately mansions to l oft-style apartments. You’ll also find detached housing here, which is relatively unique in this city, but it comes at a premium.

Shopping is a sport in Chelsea. From huge brands to small, independent stores, you can get just about anything. There are classic clothing boutiques, edgy clothing stores, and everything in between.

For art buffs, there are a few galleries in Chelsea that highlight contemporary artists and events are held throughout the year that bring big names from the art world together. Some of the most “out there” artistic movements have originated in this neighborhood.

Entertainment-wise, Chelsea is home to many annual events, including the famous Chelsea Flower Show and the Christmas Gift Fair. Several theaters in the area are great for seeing independent movies and live theater is available as well. There is, of course, the Chelsea Football Club, but they actually play in nearby Fulham. You’ve got great food options here. You’ll have your choice of dining ranging from cheap delis to 5-star restaurants. The Bluebird cafe here is just one of the local favorites. Everything you could possibly need to live happily falls in Chelsea, including hairdressers, doctors, dentists, tailors, butchers, and even a weekly farmers’ market that sells perfect little treats, organic produce, and international foods.

Meet ‘garden guru’ Ben Skinner of Town & Country Gardens

Tell us a little about the background of Town & Country.

Ben Skinner set up Town and Country Gardens in 1995, initially as a landscape gardener but it soon grew into garden maintenance as well. Starting in Notting Hill Gate where he lived, the demand for local London gardeners was so great that the business grew rapidly, employing locals and friends to help and expanding through West London and beyond. Now it employs over 30 staff but still builds and maintains gardens primarily in West London.

Do you think customers demands have changed since you started?

The clients have become increasingly more diverse as London became more popular to other nationalities. Our clients are now international and recent events have meant they spend far more time working from home, so their gardens have become a more important part of their living space.

Tell us about a project you are most proud of?

There isn’t a single project that stands out but we are very pleased that the gardens we have built have won their designers awards!

What advice would you give to a Hamptons customer who’s new home is blank canvas in terms of outdoor space?

It’s amazing what we can create in a garden nowadays and I’d always advise getting a garden design to maximise the potential of the space.

What’s the thing you enjoy most about running your company?

We love meeting people and working with them to create outdoor spaces that give genuine pleasure to be in!

Carlyle’s House

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a writer & historian & the leading literary lion of the 1840s-50s. Tell us a little of the background of your Architects practice.

DS Squared Architects is an RIBA Chartered Practice and has been providing architectural services since 2007. We have two office locations; one in Fulham and the other in North West London, to provide services throughout London to all residential and commercial clients.

Do you offer pre-exchange assessments to residential clients?

In short YES! When buying a new home, the property may not be quite be what you want, but you see the potential to achieve your dream home. What is planning?
