Henricus Wadsworth Longfellow (27 Februarii 180724 Martii 1882) fuit poeta et educator Americanus cuius opera insigniter comprehendunt "Paul Revere's Ride," The Song of Hiawatha, et Evangeline. Ipse fuit primus Americanus qui Dantis Alaghierii Divina Comoedia ex Italico in Anglicum convertit. Unus ex quinque Fireside Poets generatim habetur.

Natus est Longfellow Portlandiae in urbe, quae tum fuit pars Massachusettae, hodie Cenomannicae. Ante sex annos natu matriculavit in Academia Portlandensi, ubi in studiis litterarum versatus litteras Latinas penitus didicit. In Collegio Bowdoin annos quindecim natu cum Stephano fratre maiore itare coepit, et mox amicus Nathanielis Hawthorne factus est. Post iter trium annorum in Europa Occidentali confectum, professor in Collegio Bowdoin et deinde Collegio Harvardiano factus est. Suae primae poematum congeries fuerunt Voices of the Night ('Voces nocturnae', 1839) et Ballads and Other Poems ('Ballatae et alia poemata', 1841). Longfellow a docendo anno 1854 recessit ut plus scriberet, et reliquum suae vitae Cantabrigiae Massachusettae degit, domum habitans quae olim fuit praetorium Georgii Vasingtonii. Uxor Mary Potter post abortum fortuitum anno 1835, et Francisca Appleton, uxor altera, anno 1861 cum vestis incenderetur mortua est. Francisca mortua, Longfellow poesi difficulter laborabat, librosque conversos vehementius dixit. Poeta anno 1882 obiit.

Longfellow plerumque poemata lyrica composuit, populo grata pro musica eorum verborum, quae saepe fabulas mythologicas et legendarias praebuerunt. Factus est poeta Americanus populo sui temporis gratissimus, atque adeo res prosperas trans Atlanticum habuit, reprehensus autem quia modos Europaeos aemulatus est et diserte pro vulgo scripsit.

Longfellow fuit populo sui temporis gratissimus.[2] Amicus quidem ei scripsit: "nemo poeta vivus tam plenius agnotus est."[3][4] Multa eius operum ingenium Americanum et eius heredium formare adiuverunt, praecipue per poema "Paul Revere's Ride."[5] Ipse in Civitatibus Foederatis persona tam admirationi fuit quam suus dies natalis septuagensimus, anno 1877, fuit pro feriis civitatis, pompis, orationibus, publicisque eius poematum recitationibus praeditis.
