For those conservative voters long turned off by former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric, his somewhat softened tone in accepting the Republican nomination is a welcome relief. Iowa farmer Dave Struthers calls Trump's delivery “much improved.” Trump has a long history of divisive commentary. But on Thursday night in Milwaukee, he spoke in a quieter, more relaxed tone for at least the first part of the speech. He called for an end to discord in national politics. But his remarks became more ascerbic as the night wore on. He said Democrats are destroying the country and claimed without evidence that Central and South American countries are sending their muderers to the U.S.

President Joe Biden is facing the stark reality that many Democrats at the highest levels want him to consider withdrawing from the 2024 election to make way for a new nominee atop the ticket. Some think it's the party's best chance at preventing widespread losses in November. It’s a pivotal few days for Biden and his party: Donald Trump has just wrapped up an enthusiastic Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and his running mate, U.S. Sen. JD Vance, addressed a national audience as the GOP vice presidential nominee. Biden’s campaign is calling an all-staff meeting Friday while the Democratic National Committee’s rulemaking arm also expects to meet.

Republican officials, strategists and activists who packed into their national convention this week are exuding a confidence not seen in decades. Boos and infighting marred Donald Trump’s first convention in 2016. But this one in Milwaukee was defined by overwhelming displays of party unity as GOP leaders and even Trump skeptics reveled in the excitement of what many view as an all but certain victory in November. Many describe Trump’s near-assassination last week in Pennsylvania as the last piece to bring everyone together in spite of Trump’s personal and political baggage. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders are intensifying lobbying efforts to force President Joe Biden to leave the 2024 race, believing he cannot win.
