Neil Gaiman has denied allegations of sexually abusive behaviour against two women during consensual relationships.

The alleged victims claim to have had degrading sex with Gaiman, which was not always consensual. The Sandman creator was in otherwise consensual relationships with both women.

The alleged incidents were reported as part of an investigation by Tortoise, which was partly led by Rachel Johnson, the sister of Boris Johnson.

Gaiman, 63, has claimed that he offered to assist the New Zealand police following a woman’s complaint in 2022, but it was not taken up. He said this reflects its lack of substance.

The publication claimed that the authorities said they made a ‘number of attempts to speak to key people as part of this investigation and those efforts remain ongoing’.

They added there were a ‘number of factors to take into consideration with this case, including location of all parties’.

One woman claimed to the publication that she was sexually abused within hours of meeting Gaiman in 2022, when she was 22 and he was 61.

She reportedly made a complaint to the police about Gaiman, but he was never accused of any criminal offence because of lack of evidence.

Gaiman has insisted that their three-week sexual relationship was consensual.

He has also said that messages from the woman are ‘evidence that she consented to sex with him’, Tortoise reported.

The second woman was 18 when she met Gaiman in 2003.

She claims they began a relationship when she was aged 20, and that they had rough and painful sex that she ‘neither wanted nor enjoyed’. The woman alleges that she and Gaiman once had sex when she said she did not want to.

Gaiman has stressed that the sexual encounters were consensual and that they did not have full sexual intercourse, Tortoise reported.

The allegations are the subject of a four-part podcast, Master: The Allegations against Neil Gaiman.

The English author also wrote Amazon Prime Video’s Good Omens and American Gods.

Steve Coogan, Douglas Booth, and Indya Moore were just announced as new cast members on Netflix show The Sandman, which is based on Gaiman’s comic book.

Gaiman was married to Amanda Palmer between 2011 and 2022 and the couple share a son. Palmer spoke about their choice to not be monogamous in a 2019 interview.

‘There are lots of varieties of open relationships… we’re not interested in having big, multiple relationships; we’re just slutty, but compassionately so,’ she told The Times.

He also has three children with his former wife Mary McGrath.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Gaiman’s representatives and New Zealand Police for comment.
