What is a mortgage broker?

A mortgage broker, also sometimes called a mortgage adviser (or in our case a ‘Mortgage Expert’) gives advice on and helps to arrange mortgages. It’s possible to arrange a mortgage without one, but having someone with current in-depth industry knowledge in your corner can be a real plus! Not convinced? Read more about why you should consider a mortgage broker in our detailed guide.

Mortgage broker FAQs

Mojo provides impartial and objective mortgage and protection advice and our recommendations are solely based on what’s best for our customers. We make our recommendations from a pool of over 70 lenders, however, it’s important to understand that we cannot consider every mortgage product available in the UK market or cover every possible set of personal financial circumstances.

Lenders and affiliates do not compensate us more to recommend them over others, we are simply compensated when a mortgage application is completed. We make every effort to ensure that the mortgage deals shown are as current as possible, however, please note that mortgage rates can change very quickly, so please double check with our mortgage advisors or the individual lenders.

The content on our site is not advice and is for guidance only. Please speak to one of our CeMAP qualified mortgage advisors for personally tailored advice.

Online brokers, like ourselves, provide the same service as a standard broker - assisting our customers in securing the most suitable mortgage - but without the need for time-consuming face to face meetings. We use bespoke Fintech to assist with the speed of your application, but you'll still speak to a real human broker.

Mojo Mortgages meets the FCA definition of a whole of market broker, as we consider and provide advice on a sufficiently large number of regulated mortgage contracts which are generally available from the market.

This means that our mortgage advisors are able to compare a wide range of mortgages for you to find the most suitable for your circumstances.

Yes, we are paid by lenders when we successfully arrange a mortgage, so we don’t pass any costs onto you.

Yes we can. There are plenty of lenders that we work with who are happy to support self-employed applicants who can prove their income.

It depends on the severity of your credit issues. Some more minor credit issues won’t be a problem for most lenders, however, if they are severe or very recent, it can be more difficult. However, we’re happy to assess your circumstances and refer you to a trusted partner that specialises in bad credit mortgages, should we be unable to help you.

Yes, we have a dedicated mortgage protection team with a wealth of experience. They can help you depending on the type of protection insurance you’re looking for.

We can assist on first charge residential and buy-to-let mortgages, but not with commercial mortgages or equity release products.

The very simple answer is, for more choice. If you go to your own bank, or any individual lender, they can only recommend their own limited product range. If you use a whole-of-market mortgage broker like ourselves, there are literally thousands of deals that may be more suitable for you.

No, in fact, it can save time. We already know what the lender needs to see, so we can make sure you’ve got everything you need before you apply. What’s more, you can submit your documents once through our online portal and then you won’t need to worry about sending them to the lender directly - we take care of it for you.

This can be particularly timesaving if you’re unsuccessful with one lender, or change your mind, because we’re already prepared for your next application.

All of our mortgage advisors are CeMAP qualified and have at least 2 years experience when they join us. We are regulated by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) under the Financial Services Register number: 478215.

Mojo is a trading style of Life’s Great Limited. You can check our authorisation and permitted activities on the Financial Services Register by visiting the FCA’s website or by contacting the FCA on 0800 111 6768.

Mojo mortgage brokers are impartial, whole-of-market mortgage brokers, whereas brokers attached to lenders are known as ‘tied brokers’. There’s also another category of brokers, known as ‘multi-tied brokers’.

Tied brokers are bound to one lender, muti-tied are bound to a panel that they can recommend. Whole-of-market brokers have a broad access to the mortgage market, which tends to include most or all lenders.

Yes, our mortgage advisors only ever recommend mortgages that are suitable to your specific needs. Ethically, this is absolutely what we uphold as a brand. However, Mojo brokers are also bound by the regulations of the FCA, which does not allow brokers to benefit from pushing inappropriate mortgage products.
