Ribut geomagnetik adalah ganguan sementara pada magnetosfera yang disebabkan oleh gelombang kejutan angin suria dan/atau awan medan magnet yang bertindak balas dengan medan mangnet bumi. Peningkatan pada tekanan angin suria pada awalnya menekan magnetosfera dan medan magnet angin suria bertindak balas dengan medan mangnet Bumi dan memindahkan peningkatan tenaga pada magnetosfera. Kedua tindak balas menyebabkan peningkatan pada pergerakan plasma melalui magnetosfera (didorong oleh peningkatan medan eletrik dalam magnetosfera) dan peningkatan arus eletrik pada magnetosfera dan ionosfera.
