File your taxes for free with the new IRS Direct File program. New Yorkers with relatively simple returns qualify for this pilot program. Learn more here

Do you make less than $64,000 a year, or are you over 60? The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation for qualifying constituents. Find help near you.

Do you make less than $73,000 a year?Check out IRS Free File, which lets qualified taxpayers prepare and file federal income tax returns online using guided tax preparation software. It’s safe, easy, and free. 

Veterans can file their taxes for free usingMilTax e-filing. This new software is available to service members, eligible family members, and survivors. Check to see if you’re eligible.

Need to make sure your tax preparer is legitimate? The IRS recommends finding a tax professional who is certified.

Do you need the assistance of the Taxpayer Advocate? The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that uses the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights as a guide to deliver assistance to any taxpayer. 

What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and how do I know if I need one? ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the IRS for people not eligible for a Social Security Number. For example, if you are undocumented, you likely need an ITIN. ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status. The ITIN does not authorize work in the U.S., provide eligibility for Social Security Benefits, or qualify a dependent for Earned Income Tax Credit Purposes. Are you looking for in-person advice and assistance with your taxes? The centers below offer advice and assistance to taxpayers and those seeking to apply for an ITIN. They cannot prepare tax returns but are holding extended hours through April 15th, 2024. There are two in The Bronx and Queens: 

  1. 57-07 Junction Blvd. Elmhurst, NY 11373 available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday (**Extended hours Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. from 1/23 to 4/16 **)
  2. 1200 Waters Place Bronx, NY 10461 available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday (**Extended hours Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. from 1/23 to 4/16 **)

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is providing free in-person and virtual tax assistance to older adults with low to moderate income. Tax-Aide is offered with the IRS, and AARP membership is not required. Click here to get started.
