11 Secret Restaurants in the U.S. You Don’t Know About (but Should)

Let’s be honest: We’re not the best at keeping secrets. So it shouldn’t shock anyone that we’re about to spill the beans on some of America’s best-hidden culinary gems. These 11 restaurants are squirreled away in basements, in out-of-the-way alleys or even within other restaurants. They don’t have signs or sometimes even menus, and you can usually forget about a phone number. But that just adds to the fun.

Vernon’s Hidden Valley Steakhouse: Albuquerque, Nm

Vernon’s Speakeasy/Yelp
https://www.yelp.com/biz/vernons-speakeasy-los-ranchos

We don’t usually think of steakhouses as romantic, but this New Mexico spot fits the bill. Tucked underground and behind a liquor store, it’s full of dark corners, flickering candles, live jazz and heavy velvet curtains. Make sure to knock three times and have a password ready to get in.

Bohemian: New York, Ny

@maggieats/Instagram

This place is the ultimate catch-22: You need a reservation to get in, and the number is unlisted. If you get a coveted referral from another diner, the result is cozy and dinner-party-esq, with simple but perfect dishes like miso black cod and Wagyu beef steaks. (The restaurant is behind one of the city’s best butchers, so steak is always a safe bet.)

We don’t usually think of Disneyland as the paragon of fine dining. But a private dining club in the park’s New Orleans section has proved us wrong. There are plenty of upscale options like king crab-stuffed lobster tail and Colorado lamb chops with thyme-infused stock. But being a VIP at the happiest place on earth comes with a few hurdles: a 14-year waiting list, a $25,000 initiation fee, a $10,000 annual fee and a rigorous background check, to name just a few.

Safe House: Milwaukee, Wi

@safehousemke/Instagram

This super-kid-friendly spot is basically a spy theme park in restaurant form. The food is standard Midwestern (burgers, cheese curds, etc.). But you’re really coming for the entertainment: scavenger hunts, magicians, spy memorabilia and the legendary entrance exam (guests who don’t know the password have to perform a series of stunts, which are broadcast on video screens around the restaurant).

Trois Mec: Los Angeles, Ca

@troismecla/Instagram

This elegant French restaurant from celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre goes the extra mile in terms of deception. Not only does it not have its own sign, but the owners went so far as to leave up the sign for the old pizza joint that used to occupy the space. Even the $85 tasting menu is secret until you show up. We recommend perseverance: Since opening in 2013, it’s been consistently named one of L.A.’s best.

Vegas is no stranger to VIP experiences, but this nine-seat bar is still one of the most exclusive tickets in town. Hidden within another José Andrés restaurant, Jaleo, é is a progressive menu—often upwards of 20 courses—crafted daily by the chefs. To get reservations, it’s best to have a good alarm clock: They’re accepted first-come, first-served at 12 a.m. PST by email, a month before each date.

Washington isn’t exactly a place for keeping secrets—so it’s extra important to have a quiet space for dates or other kinds of political wheeling and dealing. This side dining room at P.J. Clarke’s restaurant functions almost like a private club, but when there’s room, non-members are welcome for excellent steak, seafood and some much-coveted privacy.

At most gas stations, the words “croquetas de chorizo” and “octopus Galician style” don’t usually cross our minds. But in Miami, you can fuel up and also have one of the city’s best meals—and some signature sangria—all in one fell swoop.

6 Ways to Make Your Eyelashes Look Longer ASAP

Getting your eyelashes just right every morning is no easy feat. You want them to be thick but not too thick (because then they look clumpy). You want them to be long but not too long (so they don’t look spidery). And you want them to be curled but not crimped (because that just looks painful). Here, six quick tips to getting great lengths—without having to go to them.

Related: 4 Mascara Rules to Live By

Twenty20

Apply Mascara from the Top
Skip multiple coats, which can get messy. Instead, run the wand over just the top side of your tips first. Then sweep on a second coat from base to tip as usual.

Heat Your Lash Curler
Zap it with your hair dryer for 15 seconds, and then curl your lashes as you normally would. The heat will bump up the volume—and deliver staying power, too.

Twenty20

Twenty20

Use Your Wand Wisely
When you want to open your eyes up for a more youthful look, brush your lashes toward the inner corners of your eyes. If sultry is what you’re going for, work the brush outward. Same brush, two very different results.

Try False Lashes
Sure, they look intimidating in the box and you probably haven’t worn a pair since prom, but once you get the hang of putting on false lashes, they can really make a difference. For the easiest (and most natural-looking) application, cut the full strip into thirds and only use what you need. Putting them too close to the inner corners can be irritating, so start at the center of your lashes—or just focus on the outer area for a fanned-out effect.

Get a Lift
An eyelash lift, that is. It’s essentially a lash tinting and semi-permanent perm rolled into one awesome service so you get darker, curled lashes for up to 8 to 12 weeks without ever having to touch a tube of mascara.

Or Try Extensions
Though the cost of getting them is nothing to (ahem) bat an eye at, the weeks of waking up with lush, perfectly curled lashes might be worth it. One word of advice: Keep them away from water and you can easily get an extra week of wear out of those puppies.

This Brita for Wine Solves Your Red Wine Hangover Problem

Ah, Montepulciano. It goes down so smoothly at the end of a long day—unless of course your glass of red gives you a blinding headache, a common symptom of an allergy to sulfite (aka a preservative that’s added to wine to keep it fresh).

Enter the Üllo—pronounced oo-low—a wine purifier that acts like a Brita water filter to remove sulfites and restore your bottle of red to its original state.

Because here’s the thing: Without sulfites, it would be impossible for that delicious bottle of red to survive the transfer from, say, Abruzzo, Italy, all the way to your glass in the United States. But the headaches aren’t worth it, which is where the Üllo comes in. Simply uncork the bottle, pour it through the filter at the top and watch as it magically strains the sulfites out of your wine.

There’s even a way to give yourself a sulfite-free, individual-sized pour: Just remove the filter from the Üllo decanter and place it on top of your actual glass. Voilà!

10 Expensive Items That Cost a Lot Less in the Fall

Autumn is here, which means it’s the perfect time to stock up on some of the bigger-ticket items you’ve been saving for all year. Here’s why: The holidays (and, hello, the new year) are coming, and the pressure is on for stores to move their merch. Here, ten items to buy—and save big on—now.

A New Car

Twenty20

Make way for that Mini Cooper. Car dealerships tend to have a lot more wiggle room with discounts and savings on current-year models in early fall since they need to clear space for the next year’s lines. What does this mean? If you’re in the market for a new car, negotiate. The odds are in your favor that you can knock thousands off the sticker price.

A New House

It makes sense: People are much more likely to move during the summer months if their goal is to be completely settled in time for the new school year. That leaves Realtors lowering the asking prices for condos and houses because fewer people are in the market looking to buy.

Since most new appliances hit the sales floor in mid-October, retailers start marking down last year’s models as soon as September. Case in point: this promotion from Best Buy for up to 30 percent off select appliances.

No, it’s not because summer is over and outdoor time is waning. New bicycles typically come out just in time for back-to-school. But if you’re OK pedaling around town on an older model—which, to be frank, is probably nearly identical to the current version—buy now. You could score as much as 30 percent off.

Sunglasses

Twenty20

Sure, snow can cast a glare, but for the most part, people are less inclined to splurge on sunglasses during colder (and non-beachy) months. This means there’s no better time of year to peep stores like Sunglass Hut—or other major retailers like J.Crew—for deals.

Why You Should Apply Your Moisturizer with a Makeup Brush

You have an abundance of beauty brushes for applying your foundation, eye shadow and blush—but when it comes to your moisturizer, you go straight for your fingertips. Um, ew. Here’s a much better way to combine the two techniques.

What you need: A synthetic, non-abrasive makeup brush (we like this one from IT Cosmetics).

What you do: Dab the brush in your moisturizer. (Aim for about a dime-sized amount.) Then smooth it over your skin until it’s blended and your face feels hydrated.

Why this works: Not only will the brush help you apply the product more evenly so you don’t waste even a drop of your pricey moisturizer, but it also helps you avoid transferring dirt from your hands, which can clog your pores and cause breakouts, to your face.

Yes, you still need to clean your brush. Don’t worry—a quick rinse in dish soap and olive oil once a week should do the trick. Just make sure in the interim to wipe off excess moisturizer onto a tissue and store your brush in a cool, dry place. Oh, and maybe don’t cross-contaminate with other makeup (i.e., use this brush solely for moisturizer).

This time, the Carpool Karaoke king—and boy band member wannabe—took to The Price is Right parking lot to race fastest man on Earth Usain Bolt. Oh yeah, and actor Owen Wilson joined in the fun. After a false start (come on, Owen!) all three—plus the rest of the show’s staff—were off on the 100-meter dash of their lives.

Spoiler alert: James lost. But you’ll love the hilarity that ensued while he was giving it his all.

1 ball pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. If you have a pizza stone, place it on the bottom rack of your oven before you turn on the heat.

2. Make the Sauce: In a small pot, heat the cream over medium heat. When it begins to simmer, stir in the Parmesan, garlic powder and black pepper. Remove the pot from the heat and cool slightly.

3. Make the Pizza: Oil a baking sheet with the olive oil. Turn the dough out onto the baking sheet and stipple with your fingers into a ½-inch-thick circle.

4. Spread an even layer of Parmesan sauce over the pizza dough. Crack the eggs onto the pizza and then arrange the tomatoes and bacon around the eggs.

5. Transfer the pizza to the oven (onto the pizza stone, if using) and bake until the eggs are cooked and the crust is beginning to turn golden brown, 10 to 13 minutes.

⅓ cup minced cilantro

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet with nonstick spray.

2. Arrange the waffles in an even layer on the baking sheet. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the waffles and then transfer the sheet to the oven. Bake until the waffles are golden and the cheese is melted, 8 to 10 minutes.

5. Sprinkle the bacon evenly over the nachos and then drizzle with the salsa. Top with the red onion, avocado and cilantro. Serve immediately.

The Uncommon (But Correct) Way to Use Hairspray

Look at you, being ambitious. Waking up an extra hour early to dry and style your hair for a big day of meetings and events. You need those perfectly bouncy waves to stay intact for hours—so you fire up the Aqua Net like it’s a blowtorch in a Batman movie. But not so fast. We’ve found a better way.

You actually need to spray the hair spray into your hands. And then you smooth it over the areas in need.

Why? Two words: helmet hair. The thing you’re trying to avoid. When you spray directly onto your hair, you risk inconsistency (and, worse, overdoing it). By putting the formula in your hands first, you’re able to directly apply it on the flyaways and ends that really need it. And nothing more.

Yes, you’re left with sticky palms afterward, but a quick hand wash and you’re out the door—with the most natural-looking blowout of all time.
