4 Kick-Ass Authors Who Create, Celebrate, and Embody Strong Women #IWD2016

For International Women’s Day we have compiled 4 of our amazing female authors who are strong, confident women and who write about strong, confident women.

1. Rupi Kaur, author of Milk and Honey

“It’s the strength in women that has inspired me. my mother, my sisters, my friends. the women throughout history who have endured. who have fought against patriarchy and fought for the rights of those around them.” [x]

Rupi Kaur is a feminist Canadian poet who writes about the relationships and experiences of young women.

2. Cassandra Clare, author of The Mortal Instruments Series

“I wanted to make sure that every book passed the Bechdel test – you know, are there two women in it, are they separately named, do they sit down and talk, and do they talk about something other than a guy? So I wanted to be like, yes, every one of these books passes that test.” [x]

Cassandra Clare’s series has been adapted into a movie and the T.V. series is currently streaming on Netflix.

3. Mary Louise Parker, author of Dear Mr. You

image

“I’ve had issues with certain things I’ve been asked to do.” She adds that there is a double standard for actors—that a man is seen as being in charge of his craft if he complains about lines or scenes, whereas a woman is branded a “huge bitch.” [x]

Mary Louise Parker is not only an author, but an award winning actress who is vocal about the negative ways women are portrayed in Hollywood media and treated in the industry.

4. Amy Schumer, author of The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo (Out 8.16.16)

“I am not laying in that freshman year bed anymore ever again. I am a woman with thoughts and questions and shit to say. I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story — I will.“[x]

Amy Schumer’s speech at the Gloria Awards and Gala (hosted by the Ms. Foundation for Women) shows that she is much more than just the loud-mouth crude joker the media portrays. Amy is a champion for women, breaking down barriers towards how females are expected to look, act, and speak.

Happy International Women’s Day!
