Understanding Google RCS

Google RCS (Rich Communication Services) offers a feature-rich messaging experience for Android phone users.

When everyone in a conversation is using Google RCS and has chat features turned on, this service allows you to:

  • Send messages over mobile data and Wi-Fi
    • Mobile data usage will use data from your plan or add-on
  • Share files and high-quality photos
  • See when someone is typing
  • See when your messages are read

If any person in the conversation (message sender or receiver) is not using Google RCS (or does not have chat features turned on), messages are sent by SMS or MMS on the cellular network (rather than using mobile data or Wi-Fi).

Depending on your plan and usage, charges may apply for messages sent by SMS (text message) or MMS (picture or video message).

For more details, see Google Messages.

  • To download the app, visit the Google Play store
  • To learn more about RCS chat features, how to turn them on, and how Google uses and protects your RCS message data when chat features are on, see Chat features by Google FAQ

SaskTel supports Google RCS on compatible Android devices. Google RCS is compatible with all Android devices operating with an up-to-date Android Messages app.
