Metrotitan (G1)

Metrotitan is a Decepticon Titan from the Zone portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The very definition of a "bad neighborhood".

Constructed on Saturn's moon Titan by the Autobots, Metrotitan (メトロタイタン Metorotaitan) is a massive warrior wielding a devastating freeze ray that can stop most enemies cold. Unfortunately for the Autobots, Metrotitan defected to the Decepticons and was taught the ways of evil by the Nine Great Demon Generals under the command of Violengiguar. Whether his defection was a conscious choice or the result of forcible reprogramming is a matter of contention, though Metrotitan and his former allies have ultimately accepted his evil ways.

He leads the Metrosquad and has also been known to house the Race Track Patrol.

In one universe, he is an Autobot-allied Titan who serves as an Autobot City on Earth.

Created on Saturn's moon, Titan, Metrotitan was appointed leader of the Metrosquad and schooled in the ways of evil by Violengiguar's Nine Great Demon Generals. His first mission upon activation was to attack the Autobot Lunar Zone Base on Earth's moon commanded by Rabbicrater. Zone Part 7

He proved to be very impressive in battle, and even killed the veteran Autobot Galaxy Shuttle in his attack on the Lunar Zone Base. Metrotitan might even have been able to best Dai Atlas if Sonic Bomber hadn't kept the Metrosquad busy. Zone Part 8

Metrotitan then unleashed his Freeze Beam Gun and used it to reduce the moon to an icy tomb. His freeze beam was even powerful enough to stop Sky Powered in its tracks. However, the Decepticon warrior was unprepared for the arrival of a third Powered Master named Road Fire. His freeze beam was easily countered by Road Fire's "Fire Kick" and Metrotitan was soundly defeated. Zone Part 9

Metrowars

Attack on Metrotitan.

Years later, Metrotitan fell in with High Regent Scrash's splinter faction of Decepticons and was put under the command of Straxus, who dubbed the titan's base mode as "Darkmount" after his former home. In a devastating battle, Metrotitan was able to soundly demolish his kin, Metroplex.

In a few days, the Decepticons attacked again with Metrotitan, who took down Metrobase on his way to Scramble City. But the Autobots were more prepared this time, having rebuilt Metroplex into a larger robot who towered over Metrotitan. When Metrotitan rejected the rumors of having been reprogrammed by the Nine Great Demon Generals, Metroplex accepted this admission and banished Metrotitan from the Autobots forevermore. Badly damaged by Metroplex's antimatter projector, Metrotitan wisely decided to retreat. Metrowars

Convalescing afterward, Metrotitan raged over his defeat and swore vengeance against Metroplex, considering the fact that he could feel such an emotion to be proof that his mind was his own and untampered with. Straxus, perched on his shoulder with his hand wired into Metrotitan's head, coolly encouraged his beliefs. Concurrently, Metrobomb staged an attempt to steal data on Metroplex's new form so that Metrotitan could be rebuilt into a similar body, but he failed. Metrowars 2

Metrotitan was eventually defeated for good by Metroplex, who had tracked him down in a failed attempt to talk Straxus into surrendering. Wings Universe

Nine million years ago, the Metrotitan was a fortress in the Glibax flats. In the first decade of the Decepticon uprising, it came under siege by the Decepticons, who eliminated all resistance and then moved on. The more entrepreneurial Rage of the Stormtroopers salvaged the Metrotitan and retrofitted it as a mobile battle station under his control.

After capturing the Heart of the Dragon from Median, Rage's ultimate goal was to implant the powerful personality component in the Metrotitan itself, hoping to reformat the fortress into a massively powerful Transformer under his control. He hoped this grand gesture would be enough to get him noticed by the Decepticon generals, and rise in the rebel hierarchy. First, however, he tested the heart in a micro-sized body, creating the dragon known as Brimstone. Brimstone rampaged through the Metrotitan after the Elite Guardsmen hunting Rage, until his energy levels destroyed the pint-sized terror from the inside out, apparently taking out the Metrotitan as well in the explosion. Legends claimed that Metrotitan was one of the original three Titans; along with Chela, his "mate", and his doppelgänger Metroplex, the three had supposedly fought alongside Primus during the original battle against his dreaded "opposite". The first recorded instance of the three original Titans resurfacing in modern Cybertronian history occurred some twelve million years ago, during the initial unification of the Thirteen, when Onyx Prime called upon them to end the war between the forces of the Crystal City and the Darklands. Their presence did just that, stunning the warriors into submission long enough for Onyx to reach Megatronus and negotiate a truce.

During the subsequent celebrations, Onyx announced that he had communed with Metrotitan, and designed a symbol, based off the countenance of Primus, that would commemorate this new alliance. Origin Myths Unbeknownst to the other members of the Thirteen, "Onyx Prime" was not who he appeared to be—in reality, "Onyx" was a cover identity for a time-travelling Shockwave, who had embarked on a new mission to engineer Cybertronian history to his own devising. The "face of Primus" was but one of many ontological paradoxes he would seed history with, which included the "Dark Cybertron" prophecy and the legend of a "Chosen One", a conqueror who would unite Cybertron in its hour of need. Following the reign of the Thirteen and the First Cybertronian Civil War, many other Titans departed the planet, until only three remained: Trypticon, Metroplex and Metrotitan. Metrotitan went into hibernation beneath the Crystal City, and came to be guarded by Omega Supreme. When Nova Prime discovered the upper city and allied himself with Omega, the guardian hid Metrotitan's existence from the Prime. His recalcitrance paid off when Nova fell into megalomania and departed Cybertron to conquer other worlds, at which point Omega revealed the Metrotitan to Nova's more respectful former follower, Dai Atlas. Omega explained that Metrotitan would only awaken in the presence of a great Cybertronian, but that it would be Dai Atlas's task to protect him until then. When the Great War subsequently broke out in the following millennia, Dai Atlas became a conscientious objector and gathered together many like-minded Transformers to form the Circle of Light, and used Metrotitan's energies to power their departure from Cybertron. All Good Things Settling on the planet Theophany, the Circle built a new Crystal City atop the still-sleeping Metrotitan and continued to use his energies to power their new home. At some point, Crystal City was razed by Tyrest's Legislators, leaving no sign of life, save Metrotitan slumbering underneath. When the crew of the Lost Light arrived to investigate, a subsidence sent them tumbling into the cavern beneath the city where the Titan lay, and they decided to enter its very body so that the their resident mnemosurgeon Chromedome could tap its brain and hopefully find out what had befallen the Circle of Light. Chromedome discovered that Metrotitan's mind was still alive and screaming in frustration—he had heard the call sent out by Cybertron upon the planet's reformatting to "come home", but having been drained by the Circle for so long, he lacked the necessary power to teleport his giant bulk across space. With Metrotitan willing to destroy himself to separate his spark from his body in order to return home, Brainstorm used miniaturization technology to shrink the giant down to a size that his reduced power could teleport away from the planet. Though millions of years had passed, Onyx Prime was not done with his former servant; using the supplies of Ore-10 that his younger self had once invented, Onyx had been able to reprogram Metrotitan with a specific goal in mind. To ensure that Cybertron would remain weak and divided over the years to come, Onyx had convinced Metrotitan that the legends of the "Chosen One" were true... and that the vain, gullible Starscream was that Chosen One. The Hallowing When Metrotitan arrived back on Cybertron, he attempted to return to his old home in Crystal City, but wound up physically enmeshing his molecules into those of the city and causing a local destabilization of reality.

While Autobot scientist Wheeljack worked to contain the impending disaster, Prowl and Starscream got closer to the Titan and where he awoke, crediting Starscream's presence as the reason. Metrotitan dubbed Starscream the Chosen One and thanked him for allowing him to awaken one last time, before warning the Transformers to depart so that they would not be destroyed along with him. The subsequent antimatter explosion seemingly obliterated him; All Good Things in reality, however, Shockwave's supplies of Ore-9 simply teleported Metrotitan onto the next leg of his journey: Earth. When the Necrotitan appeared near Crystal City after its reconstitution from Shockwave's Ore-14, many Transformers–including Starscream himself–mistook it for Metrotitan. Winners & Losers

Having somehow returned to his original size in the interim, Metrotitan wound up buried beneath Monument Valley, As Above...So Below above a rich seam of Ore-13, White Light and went into stasis until he was needed. As Above...So Below During the turbulent days after his annexation of Earth into the Council of Worlds, Optimus Prime dreamt of Metrotitan bursting free from the ground; this, in turn, prompted him to base his forces in Monument Valley. Alpha Trion, continually urged Optimus to "reach out" with his feelings, It's Beginning To And Back Again and during a standoff against the Earth Defense Command Prime seemingly pulled this feat off and reawakened Metrotitan, his dramatic arrival promptly intimidating the humans into retreating. Footage of Metrotitan's arrival reached Cybertron thanks to the efforts of Circuit and Longtooth. The sight of Optimus commanding the loyalty of a Titan as the Thirteen once had prompted a fresh wave of support from those religiously inclined colony worlds, who viewed him as the legendary Arisen". No Fair Fights This was yet another step in Shockwave's ultimate goal: by setting Optimus up as a "true" Prime, Shockwave could subsequently discredit Prime and the lineage that had preceded him. In order to appear less imposing to the people of Earth, Metrotitan transformed into his city mode; hoping that the Titan would become an embassy for the Autobots on Earth, Optimus pronounced that Metrotitan would become "Autobot City". Shortly afterwards, Metrotitan beamed a data pulse into space, a message which immortalized Optimus as the leader who had ended the Great War and shepherded Earth into the galactic community. On Cybertron, this data pulse awoke Sentinel Prime, who took up arms to "purify" his much-changed homeworld; The Last Autobot it eventually reached Micronus Prime in the parallel universe of Microspace, and alerted the villainous Baron Karza to the existence of Ore-13 on Earth. When Sentinel Prime arrived on Earth to persuade Optimus to join his cause, he did so using Metrotitan's Spacebridge, destroying it behind him. In the ensuing battle beneath the city, Garrison Blackrock—now revealed as the ancient Sovereign—used his Titan Master abilites to open a new Spacebridge portal that warped himself, Optimus, Soundwave, and Sentinel to the dead world of Prion. After Optimus and Soundwave returned to Earth, the Cybertronians spent the next several months operating out of Metrotitan, performing charitable missions across Earth to prove their good intentions to humanity. Concorde Hymn While discussing the Transformers' continued presence on Earth, however, Scarlett and "Joe Colton" worried that Metrotitan's presence had galvanized the citizens of Cybertron behind Optimus, and potentially attracted other aliens to Earth. By this time, Metrotitan's Spacebridge had been repaired, O Ship of State linked to Metroplex's own Spacebridge on Cybertron and becoming the primary means of travel between Earth and Cybertron. Ping Somehow, Metrotitan's Space Bridge was able to pierce dimensional barriers and access Micronus Prime's own Spacebridge, O Ship of State and as the destructive Entropy Cloud threatened to consume Microspace, Micronus sought help from Optimus and asked Metrotitan to pass his message along. Metrotitan went completely silent in the hopes that Optimus would establish a mental link with him to investigate, but his efforts were misinterpreted as a mechanical failure and the Cityspeaker Windblade was called in to examine him. Informed Despite this setback, he continued to fulfill his duties, and, some weeks later, provided the Autobots with data regarding a recent explosion at Mount Olympus caused by destabilizing supplies of Ore-13. After finally deducing that Metrotitan was trying to speak with Optimus, Windblade decided that she couldn't risk losing the Prime and opted to link with his consciousness herself. Displeased with the "speck", Metrotitan grudgingly shunted her consciousness into the subatomic realm of Microspace to meet with Micronus. Informed Learning that the alien Dire Wraiths drew power from Ore-13, the Space Knight Rom briefly used Metrotitan's space bridge to hurl chunks of the mineral into Microspace, hoping to put the ore beyond his enemies' reach. Autobot City then became the site of all out battle as the Autobots and their new allies fought to defend Metrotitan from M.A.S.K. and the Dire Wraiths. The New Colossus When a gigantic, mutated Baron Karza joined the fray, Windblade was able to order Metrotitan to transform into his starship mode and carry the heroes to safety. Valley Forge

Optimus Prime's Moving Castle

With Baron Karza defeated, Metrotitan chose to remain airborne as the Autobots continued to police trouble spots across the world. To Walk Among the Chosen The Autobots worked to refit their ship into an embassy and living space for human-Cybertronian relations, keeping a large concentration of Ore-13 aboard. Ghost in the Machine Some months later, Metrotitan flew the Autobots to Mexico City to deal with a breach of the Tyrest Accord, and then transported Optimus and his inner retinue to Washington, D.C. to meet with the President. Partway into the discussion, the Titan detected a massive ship entering Earth's atmosphere, and on Optimus's orders he ferried the Autobots to the Matterhorn to intercept it. The ship belonged to a tribe of nomadic Junkions, and after making first contact with Wreck-Gar and Rum-Maj, the Autobots invited the impressed aliens aboard Metrotitan to begin negotiations. A Lonely Pillar on the Plain A series of diplomatic maneuvers by Prime saw a grand summit between humanity, Earth, and the Junkions held on Metrotitan's flight deck... only for the Junkions to unleash a horde of Sharkticons from their ship, intending to take over Earth. In the ensuing battle, the Junkions rammed their vessel into Metrotitan's hull, and on Prime's command, Metrotitan retaliated by partially transforming into his robot mode and ripping into the ship with his bare hands. Future Glories Lost Having removed the ship, he kept his hold on it until Optimus was able to broker a ceasefire. Feel Safe Without Regrets He later flew Optimus and the President to the Bikini Atoll to inspect the growing colony of "Little Cybertron", The Next Day, and the Next and remained there after the Autobots decided to humanely shut down Sideswipe's life support system. When Baron Ironblood attacked Buenos Aires, Blackrock used his Titan Master abilities to summon Metrotitan, who subsequently transformed to smash the force field surrounding the Onyx tower and grant Optimus Prime entry into the fray. Once Blackrock had calculated a counter-frequency to the Talisman's Dire Wraith mutation, he sent it to Metrotitan who—amplifying the signal using his supplies of Ore-13 and inbuilt space bridge—transmitted the cure and returned the infected humans to normal. The curative wave somehow had the effect of releasing the spirit of Mike Power into the body of Centurion. Ghost in the Machine

When the time came for Earth to formally join the Council of Worlds, Metrotitan relocated to Washington, D.C. so that Marissa Faireborn and her new diplomatic retinue could travel to Iacon via his Spacebridge. Primeless, Part 1 What they didn't know was that Baron Ironblood and his Iron Ring were planning their own attack on Cybertron, and used their M.A.S.S. Device to piggyback off Metrotitan's Spacebridge frequency to transport their troops to Cybertron. First Strike #2 As the Iron Ring began their attack on Cybertron, Starscream shut down Metroplex's Spacebridge; Aileron took command and ordered Metrotitan to move away from any human population centers until they could reestablish communications with Cybertron, Primeless, Part 1 rebasing him above the Greenland Sea. G.I. Joe and M.A.S.K. arrived shortly thereafter, bringing with them information that revealed Ironblood as the culprit. Skyburst and Stormclash disassembled Metrotitan's Bridge before the group set out to storm Castle Destro, and used some of its components to travel to Cybertron. First Strike #2

While doing research for his his movie, Thundercracker interviewed Alpha Trion regarding Starscream's role in Metrotitan's prophecy. Trion opined that Metrotitan had been injured and delirious at the time, and that Starscream happened to be in a position to take advantage of the Titan's rambling. Starscream: The Movie

After Optimus returned to Earth, he brought Metrotitan to Kentucky as he presided over the opening of a new Ore-13 mine. Surfeit of Primes This was cut short when Onyx Prime himself finally returned to Cybertron, and after catching wind of the situation Metrotitan transformed into robot mode and space bridged himself to Cybertron. The machinations of "Onyx" had sent Iacon into chaos, however, and as riots broke out in the streets, Metrotitan - still loyal to what he believed to be his "Chosen One"—opened fire on Onyx's flying skiff. Though Windblade and Optimus attempted to talk him down, the Titan refused to yield, and so Onyx, realizing that Metrotitan's usefulness was at an end, ordered the crew of his starship to fire on Metrotitan, blowing a hole through his chest and causing him to collapse. Now unmasked as Shockwave, the cyclopean scientist ordered his co-conspirator Liege Maximo to take a battalion of Maximals to finish off the occupants of the city, who had been inside him when he travelled to Cybertron. As Starscream - now believing himself to be the reincarnation of Megatronus - clambered up to Metrotitan's head to see if the Titan could confirm this latest revelation, the wounded Titan seemingly confirmed this theory... only for Shockwave to arrive and explain everything—he had deliberately set up Metrotitan as a catspaw, to ensure that Starscream's ineffectual leadership would leave Cybertron fractured and divided for his return. Shockwave punctuated this statement with a blast from his cannon, finally finishing off the mortally wounded Metrotitan. The Hallowing

In the aftermath of the crisis, Starscream and the other Decepticons took shelter in Metrotitan's dead body, where Starscream discussed his plans to reunite the Decepticon cells scattered throughout the galaxy to fight back against the coming threat of Unicron. Unstopped and Unstoppable His remains were presumably annihilated when Unicron consumed Cybertron. Road's End

A redeco of the Autobot Metroplex, Metrotitan transforms from a large robot to a multi-leveled "city". This mode includes a service bay with launching mechanism, a helipad, and "parking" for six vehicles in whatever his legs fold out to be. He also has a third mobile battle station mode; a more compact wheeled form that incorporates his many weapons. Additionally, his weapons are all molded with universal-sized pegs that allow them to be attached in several different configurations and locations (for example, in the otherwise-pointless holes in his kneecaps in city mode). Metrotitan came with Metroshot, Metrotank, Metrodash, and Metrobomb; the first two formed various parts of Metrotitan's alternate modes.

The smaller "limb" robots from the "Scramble City" style combiners can plug into ports in Metrotitans's shoulders and knees in robot mode, while the base modes of Silverbolt, Hot Spot, Motormaster, and Onslaught can connect to him in city mode. The peg-size of Metrotitan's weapons also allows them to be wielded by the leaders and super-robots these teams create. He also comes with a special Micromaster-style ramp with a unique attachment at one end, meant to utilize the attachment bracket for the "Scramble City" leaders' base modes.

Metrotitan's sticker sheet is a completely new one, intended to improve on Metroplex's. The original shoulder stickers (intended to resemble lighted skyscraper windows seen at night) have been replaced by warning panels since they ended up not being visible from the front of the city mode, and the "lighted skyscraper windows" pattern was used for new stickers that can be seen from that side, making the towers (especially the one behind the helipad) look more building-like.

Metrotitan and his crew are one of only two Decepticon releases in Japan in 1990. The only other Decepticon release during Zone was the Race Track Patrol.

Notes

• Metrotitan's deco is heavily influenced by Diaclone and Transformers designer Kōjin Ōno's preproduction concepts for the Diaclone version of Metroplex before the toy was shuffled into The Transformers and color design was handed off to Hasbro.^[1]
• Metrotitan's new body in the Legends manga is, of course, a "virtual redeco" of Thrilling 30 Titan Class Metroplex, complete with accompanying Metrosquad recolors.
• When the Titans were originally introduced in IDW continuity, they were referred to as "Metrotitans", and a panel showing a group of the giants (pictured at right) included one colored like the original Metrotitan in a nod to the origins of their name. This nomenclature quickly fell out of fashion, however; the species soon became known as merely "Titans", and one singular Titan was retroactively identified as being the Metrotitan. Unfortunately, the needs of the story meant that it was not the one with the faithful classic color scheme, who just has to be waved off now.
• The Necrotitan is mistakenly colored to look like IDW Metrotitan due to artist Andrew Griffith misinterpreting them as being the same 'bot. The other guy was eventually revealed to have the personal name "Quintessa".
