Who knew talking about sustainability budgets could be so fun? At our Women in Sustainability Summer Party, we had an EXCEPTIONAL panel of female sustainability professionals, including Kathryn McLeod (she/her) from The HEINEKEN Company, Bethany Jones and Fran Haycock Greencore, moderated by Isobel Wild. They shared their experiences (the good, the bad, the ugly) in managing and maximising sustainability budgets. Key takeaways: 1. Make friends with finance. Collaborate closely with your CFO to set clear success metrics. Build into existing financial cycles & timelines to secure the centralised budget. 2. Share the load. A bigger sust budget = more scrutiny. Where possible, share your sustainability costs across different departments. Focus on establishing accountability and ownership to create a ‘pull’ vs ‘push’. 3. Make a compelling business case with data followed by storytelling. Data should be the starting point. It doesn’t need to be perfect but should be “investment grade” data (e.g. location-specific insight for key commodities). Translate this data into something meaningful from a financial perspective - cost/tonne CO2e. Tell a story around these insights (e.g., we have pressure from X stakeholders to meet this goal). Thanks to the impressive sustainability women who joined us - Alana Flynn, Alanta Keanne Moodley, Beatriz Cortés Hurtado, Caroline Lewis, Charlotte Prichard, Courtney Hagen Burnside, Ellie Hardy, Emily Pinkney, Danni Tofiluk, Jana Bucek, Ruby Harlow, Charlie Hanks, Zuzana Vojtek (Polakova), Jacquie Silvester BA Hons (Open), Francesca Santucci, Elizabeth Carter, Abigail Ryan, Tara Abboud, Arifa Akther, Esther Garcia, Joanna Dias, Tetiana Sulima, Maria Sbiti (She/Her), Claire M., Emma Lindsay, Sophie Bowers, Vita Jarolimkova, Nadine Jenkins, Shivali Patel, Rebecca Elliot and Ines Sordo.
