Last week we assigned our first 'AAA' rating for a Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage project, an industry first. DAC technology captures CO₂ from the atmosphere for storage in geological formations such as basalt rocks, or for use in products such as concrete. Hear from Carbon Ratings Scientist Dr Louisa Brotherson, PhD as she explains the powerful role finance can play to help build engineered carbon removal capacity to the gigatonne scale needed to meet climate targets. Read on to learn more about the industry's first DAC rating: https://hubs.li/Q02LK1Nm0

📈 Want to help scale up the engineered carbon removals sector? ⚙️ BeZero Carbon is looking for an exceptional candidate with sector expertise in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects to join our carbon credit ratings team as a CDR Scientist (based in London, or remote). As a global carbon ratings agency, we assess the quality of climate projects in all sectors. You'll ideally have a background in geochemistry, environmental sciences, or other relevant fields. 🔎 From Direct Air Capture to Biochar, you'll be assessing the risks involved in getting innovative CDR projects off the ground, and delivering their promised climate benefits. You'll also have the opportunity to explain the science behind our ratings to BeZero's clients, including project developers, investors and corporates with net zero roadmaps. 🌱 If this ticks the right boxes, apply now to join one of the fastest-growing and most well-funded climate techs in Europe: https://hubs.li/Q02LxP3L0 #CDR #CDRjobs #EngineeredCarbonRemovals #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #CarbonCredits

How do we assess risk in Afforestation, Reforestation and Restoration (ARR) projects?🌳 Our recent webinar for project developers featured Dr Tomi Turner, PhD, Senior Carbon Ratings Scientist and ARR Lead, and Dr Saheba Bhatnagar, Senior Remote Sensing Scientist, deep diving into the key risk factors facing ARR projects. They covered topics including the impact of tree species selection, how a project's scale affects our assessment, how we look at co-benefits, and how geospatial and Earth observation capabilities feed into our analysis. Climate change and human land use have a significant impact on global fire extremes, yet these events often remain poorly documented and understood. 🔥The inaugural State of Wildfires report 2023-2024 published yesterday in Earth System Science Data and co-authored by BeZero’s Head of Remote Sensing Dr Niels Andela fills this gap. It provides an annual overview of global wildfire extremes, including a detailed assessment of the causes, predictability and attribution of regional events. 📈The main conclusions? During the 2023-2024 fire season, about 3.9 million square kilometres of vegetation burned globally resulting in 2.4 gigatonnes of carbon released into the atmosphere, ~16% above the long-term average. The largest increase, ~9x the long-term average, happened in Canada where the probability of high fire weather increased more than threefold, resulting in a significant enhancement of extreme fires from human-induced climate change. Other notable extremes were observed in Greece and western Amazonia. 🌳Forestry projects are at increasing risk from wildfires, which can result in over-crediting and non-permanence risk. Carbon finance can however play a powerful role by helping to reduce wildfire risk, through improved forest management practices for example. 🎓 BeZero collaborates with research institutions and climate scientists, including one of the lead authors of the State of Wildfires report, to help improve our ratings methodologies and fire risk assessments.
