Domestic abuse has far-reaching consequences, particularly for children and young people, who are at risk of long-term emotional and physical harm. "If they don’t have access to support, there is an increased risk of them experiencing mental health difficulties later in life and they are at greater risk of becoming involved in an abusive relationship themselves." Laura Tomsa, a Domestic Abuse Specialist Consultant, has emphasised the importance of timely, trauma-informed support. She highlighted the need for a tailored approach that considers the unique experiences of each child, involving their families and communities in the healing process. Since the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, children exposed to domestic abuse are recognized as victims in their own right. If you suspect a child may be at risk, don't hesitate to act. We're deeply concerned by the new report from Rachel de Souza, the Children's Commissioner for England, showing one in 20 child strip-searches by police are not compliant with the rules, and Black children are four times more likely to be strip-searched than white children. We support the Commissioner's call to limit the use of this traumatising practice and make sure safeguarding procedures are always followed.

At Barnardo’s, we believe in the power of prevention and early intervention to ensure children and young people lead happy, healthy, and hopeful lives.  The health system plays a crucial role in this mission, and we are proud to collaborate with HSJ to spotlight these interventions.  With an overwhelming response of 114 entries, the quality and innovation of the programmes submitted were truly outstanding.  The independent judges faced a tough challenge narrowing it down to just nine finalists, making this achievement even more remarkable.
