  • Currently, the Pantanal is facing devastating fires, driven by stressors such as the climate crisis and land clearing for cattle ranching. The expansion of agricultural activities has been ravaging the land and impacting the people and wildlife that rely on it. Despite its importance to people and planet, most of the Pantanal is unprotected and held as private lands – on the Brazilian side, 93% of the land is held privately, of which 80% is used for cattle ranching. EU 🇪🇺 demand for cheap commodities causes a large portion of this devastation. Our investigations have found over 300 direct and indirect suppliers to the EU responsible for converting vast areas of the Pantanal to cattle pasture. Between 2012-2021, an area of native vegetation converted to pasture within properties linked to the EU market was over four times the size of Paris. EU leaders have a large role they can and must play in putting a stop to this destruction. They must expand the EU Regulation on deforestation-free products to include Other Wooded Land and Other Natural Ecosystems, to prevent further deforestation in the Pantanal and other wetland ecosystems across the globe. They must also ensure that EU supply chains do not contribute to the destruction of ecosystems of global significance to biodiversity and climate.

  • Years of carbon emissions, intensifying fires, and pollution are choking people and planet, making the #ClimateCrisis the issue of our time. Despite the urgency and the deadly impacts we are already seeing, we are far off track from limiting global heating to 1.5ºC. If we exceed it, we will likely trigger multiple climate tipping points, with even worse and irreversible impacts for humanity. Now is the time for action. On #WorldCleanAirDay, we call on world leaders to: ⛽ Phase out fossil fuel subsidies and project, and ensure no new development ☀️ Increase renewable energy investment 🌱 Integrate nature-based solutions into climate targets 🌡️ Intensify our efforts to reach real-zero emissions by 2035 Read our Climate Manifesto and watch our video to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dUcyFjy

  • We campaign for stronger protections for the Pantanal wetland and work directly with local environmental defenders and Indigenous communities, offering training, equipment, and funding to grassroots initiatives. To protect the Pantanal wetland from ongoing and devastating fires, we plan to equip 100 Indigenous firefighters from the ‘Federal Fire Brigades in Indigenous Lands’ Program with drones and training. They protect native grasslands, flooded savannas and forests across the Pantanal. We plan to provide more cutting-edge drones, chosen for their effectiveness for fighting fires, as well as small, easily transportable satellite Internet antennas to ensure they have real-time communication while operating in the most remote areas. By combining traditional knowledge with modern technology, these communities are better equipped to combat fires and protect their land – however, we urgently need your help to make this a reality. If you can donate, it would make a huge difference and an immediate impact 🌎 #InternationalDayofCharity https://lnkd.in/eJPGmkuC

  • This year, fires have been devastating the Pantanal wetland. It is estimated that 2.5 million hectares have been consumed by fire in the Pantanal, surpassing the figures recorded during the same period in 2020, when nearly ⅓ of the biome was destroyed by flames. Working with Indigenous communities to fight these fires, we have trained three Prevfogo/Ibamagov Indigenous brigades, composed of members of the Terena people from Mato Grosso do Sul, to use drones we’ve donated. They are capable of detecting heat spots as soon as they emerge. The Pantanal is home to many Indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and extraordinary wildlife. However, this wetland is under increasing threat due to the intensification of agricultural activities and global heating. It is important we work together with Indigenous and traditional communities to protect their home. Learn more from the testimonies of Claudenilson da Silva, a Terena firefighter from the Cachoeirinha Indigenous Territory, and Ananias Arevalos, a Terena firefighter from the Taunay/Ipegue Indigenous Territory 🎥

  • “To invest in… deep-sea mining is believing that there will be no major technological change in battery chemistry for the next 25 years, and that’s simply not credible.” - Victor Vescovo, Ocean Explorer and Private Equity Investor. Deep-sea mining would cause irreversible damage to ocean ecosystems for minerals we don't need. The full extent of deep-sea mining’s repercussions are poorly understood, making it too huge a risk to make it worth any of its alleged benefits. Harnessing the rapid innovations in new battery technology and investing in circular economy solutions will help reduce demand for minerals, and are far more sustainable options than deep-sea mining. #DeepSeaMining #DefendTheDeep #BatteryTechnology #CircularEconomy #OceanAction #OceanProtection
