Enabling and inspiring people to understand the individual needs and perspective of cats worldwide
Über uns
International Cat Care is a charity founded in 1958 by a small group of very passionate cat lovers, who were compelled to do something about the dismal lack of information about cat health and welfare. Over 60 years later, we are still working hard to improve the health and wellbeing of all cats everywhere, working towards a world where each cat’s life experience will be as good as it can be. Our aim is to enable and inspire people to understand cats’ individual needs and perspective, and to act in the interests of each cat’s welfare. We do this by creating and sharing knowledge, insights, skills and current best practice so people can feel confident in their ability to help cats and to challenge ignorance and misconceptions. Our activities are rational and realistic, underpinned by evidence and experience, always balancing what is tried and tested with an appetite for new ideas.

🐈 The term ‘cat owner’ is commonly used in the UK, but at iCatCare we often like to use ‘caregiver’ to be inclusive of anyone who takes on the responsibility of caring for a cat in some way. This could be fostering, homing centres, catteries, cat sitters, communities that care for cats, or people who share their home with a cat. We recently learnt that in Hawaiʻi they use the term ‘kahu’ to describe the relationship between a pet and the person who cares for them. It has many meanings, like guardian, protector or steward. In the US, the terms ‘guardian’ and ‘companion’ are frequently used. In the Netherlands, a cat caregiver is ‘kattenverzorger’ but they also like to jokingly say ‘een kat heeft personee’ or ‘a cat has staff’! 😹 🌎 We’re asking our global audience, what words or phrases do you use to describe this special relationship? 💬 #Cats #CatCharity #CatCare #CatFriendly

Which bowl is best? 🥣 Plastic might not be fantastic, and metal might not be marvellous. In general, glass or ceramic bowls are better for cats. 🐈 Plastic bowls can scratch easily, and these scratches can harbour bacteria and odours. Stainless steel is hygienic and easy to clean but, if your cat wears a collar, the clink of a disc or bell against the metal can be unpleasant for them. Metal bowls could also have a cooling effect on food, which is not ideal as their natural diet would be warm, so cats would prefer their meals served at room temperature. Size and shape matter too! A wide and shallow bowl is best to help prevent the cat’s sensitive whiskers touching the sides and allow them to monitor their surroundings when eating. 🐱 Each cat is in an individual with their own preferences, so some cats will happily eat and drink from metal or plastic bowls. What bowl does your cat like to use? #WhyDoCats #Cats #CatCharity
