Jestico + Whiles has been shortlisted for the Education Architect of the Year Award (nursery - 6th form), sponsored by Swisspearl. Earlier this year BD announced all the architects who made it on to the shortlists for our prestigious annual Architect of the Year Awards. Now we are shining the spotlight on each category in turn and publishing a selection of the images that impressed the judges. #architecture #AYAs #AYAs20in24 https://lnkd.in/erMSKvDW

I really enjoyed speaking to Andrew Tuck last month for Monocle's 'The Urbanist' podcast about our work at Greenwich Millennium Village (GMV) and our survey exploring communities in London. It was great to discuss what makes a good neighbourhood, and how design can support lifelong liveability. The idea for a survey in collaboration with Taylor Wimpey plc and Countryside Partnerships came about after our our resident-led film exploring life and community at GMV: 'Village Stories'. https://lnkd.in/eFHDYAfV https://lnkd.in/eZ6xjcsq https://lnkd.in/eEkqyvBB

Senior Architect and Sustainability Champion at Jestico + Whiles

Happy to be one of the 80 signatory practices that attended Architects Declare's 5th birthday the other week. It was great to catch up with friends from the Heads of Sustainability group and celebrate AD's great successes. Since attending the first AD event in 2019 to now, AD's resources have been invaluable tools for us at Jestico + Whiles. The achievements of the past 5 years are extraordinary, and I look forward to seeing what can be accomplished next

🍾 We were excited to have over 120 people join us and our hosts Haworth Tompkins last week to celebrate UK Architects Declare's first five years. 💪 Around 80 organisations were in the room to celebrate how far our community has come over the past 5 years - including many of AD's signatory architectural practices and those across the sector and beyond who have partnered with us to shift the built environment to addressing the planetary emergency head on. The energy, dedication and creative thinking to drive our collaborative action forwards, is now more prevalent than ever. 📊 Members of our Steering Group shared their insights from AD's inception in 2019, our early activity to bring the sector together around our declaration points for systems change, and our recent programmes to produce our Practice Guide, Practice Action Masterclasses, Regenerative Design Guide, Building Blocks manifesto for transformative built environment policies and Regenerative Architecture Index. Michael Pawlyn, AD's co-instigator alongside Steve Tompkins, told everyone how  "5 years ago hardly anyone was talking about regenerative design, and now everyone is. That’s something we’ve all created together - the potential for architects to reclaim our agency as shapers of the future, as integrators and systems thinkers.” Zoe Watson said "I think everyone in this room can be extremely proud of the community we’ve grown together and the collective action we have taken over the past 5 years" Deepthi Ravi, one of our newest Steering Group members, painted a picture of our future focus: "Let’s embrace and transform the built environment that we all work with for 2030, and do it such that we plan, construct and operate within planetary boundaries.." Julia Barfield led us in a toast to AD's programme and partners, and Carrie Behar reminded us of all the people and organisations who have made AD a success and whose support is fundamental to our work. Over the years, AD has worked closely on publications and events with many partners, including the RIBA and ACAN!, with an array of organisations on our Building Blocks policy work, and most recently with Architecture Today to launch the Regenerative Architecture Index - which will announce its first year's results in September. Carrie then guided us through a short, energetic activity, asking guests to become a ‘human slido’ and move into the corners of the room designated with AD's key themes, according to where they think we should focus our activity - “influencing local and national policy, supporting signatory practices, and advocating for industry change” Our Plan for Change https://lnkd.in/eKZynqU5 sets out our approach to supporting signatories and demonstrating where leadership can replace the system that has created the climate and biodiversity emergency with one that builds a better future for us all. #ukarchitectsdeclare #happybirthday #climateaction Photography - Mervin John Panicker

We’re delighted and honoured to announce that residents have voted in favour of our regeneration plans for the Canning Town Estates in Newham. Their endorsement paves the way for the delivery of over 1,700 new and retrofitted homes – 50% of which will be genuinely affordable – within a green neighbourhood that supports well-being, active lifestyles, and sustainable community growth.   Since 2022, our multi-disciplinary design team – led by Jestico + Whiles and supported by AR Urbanism, Shade Abdul, ArchitectureDoingPlace, Alexandra Steed URBAN , Buro Happold, Urban Delivery and Accertum – has been developing the regeneration plans for the London Borough of Newham in partnership with the estate’s residents. We have met with the local community more than 100 times – facilitating co-design workshops, community fun days, stakeholder group sessions, and site walkarounds – and participated in Newham’s extensive Social Value programme by hosting apprenticeships and school visits, and delivering mentoring to young people in the borough.   We are proud of the deep bond our team has developed with the estate community, and we’re thrilled that together we have now reached this exciting milestone. Now we can look forward to designing and building their new homes. At Vincent Street, the first 147 Passivhaus-certified social rent homes are already under construction and due for completion in early 2027. With the ballot secured, our team will bring forward plans to submit an outline planning application for the remainder of the masterplan, commencing the next step of our long-term vision for the Canning Town community.   The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, said of the ballot outcome: “The result shows we have the overwhelming backing of the community, who are ready to see positive change happen in a neighbourhood that has been left behind for too long. We will now get cracking with the improvements in the local area and building much-needed homes… I am looking forward to continuing working closely with residents and bringing to life our vision for an enhanced neighbourhood and well designed, high quality homes our people can afford.” 4th image credit: Picture Plane

Here we are having a ball at the Architects’ Journal Re:Store design charrette at Ravensbourne University London a few weeks ago! Rhys Jones Carlos Gonzalez Santamarta James Anderson Considering the challenges and opportunities of the future of the department store and high street, through the lens of the historical M&S Oxford Street store, generated rich debate. The freedom and creativity of a charrette environment enabled our Jestico + Whiles team to explore the idea of "Make Do and Mend" in relation to both architecture and products, with sustainability, education and social interaction at the centre. https://lnkd.in/eivYditP

Co-designed with the local community of George Town, Jestico + Whiles unveils John Gray High School. Tailored to both the unique climate of the Cayman Islands and the needs of its staff and students, the future-forward concept unites four abandoned, retrofitted buildings to form a sustainable, collaborative school - which also doubles as a reinforced hurricane shelter.
