Yesterday our new CEO, Alex Perry, spent his first day on the job kickstarting a nationwide Nuffield Health tour, meeting with our passionate and talented teams at our state-of-the-art Barbican Fitness and Wellbeing Centre and St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City. We’ve been improving the health of people across the UK for more than 65 years and Alex is excited to build on this heritage and continue delivering the highest standards and quality of care for our patients, members, and customers. Alex said: “It was great to meet the dedicated Barbican team committed to improving health and wellbeing in the heart of London and I was inspired by my visit to our hospital at St Bart's. The commitment of our healthcare colleagues truly shines and I’m proud to be part of a team providing world-class cardiac care to the nation’s capital and making a real difference in patient care every day. Exciting times ahead!” #NuffieldHealth #buildingahealthiernation #firstday #newjob

We are proud that our own Kate Stables at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital is featured in the August issue of Nursing Times, focusing on sustainability and the environment. Kate discusses her sustainable healthcare project to move from single use laryngoscope handles in the anaesthetic room to a reusable alternative in operating theatres, significantly reducing clinical waste and lowering carbon emissions significantly. Kate also discusses her experiences in the Green Healthcare Leadership Programme, which we jointly deliver with the Florence Nightingale Foundation. A keen runner, Emma confesses that after half a decade of slimming clubs she struggled to maintain her ideal weight. She would always lose some before gaining more. To break the cycle she enlisted the help of a personal trainer to get in shape, where she was introduced to resistance training, which has helped her smash her running personal bests, and drop more than a dress size. She said: ‘I always assumed that it would be cardio that would help me lose weight and had no idea that lifting weights would help me immensely, which it did. I did a lot of deadlifts, back squats, leg press, etc. We were mainly working on my legs and upper body with some core and sometimes a bit of interval training on the treadmill.’ When she started working with Sam in 2018, her personal best for a 5K was around the 30-minute mark, and for a half marathon it was two and a half hours. Her new personal bests are 24 minutes for a 5K and 1 hour 53 minutes for a half marathon. She’s doing her first full marathon this year and last year, she took part in a relay, running from London to Paris – completing an impressive 40 miles over four days! ‘I was amazed at how my running improved, not only that, the work I do with Sam has meant I haven’t sustained any injuries, while others in my running club, have.’ Sam also encouraged Emma to track food intake using an app and suggested cutting back a bit on the carbohydrates and increasing protein intake.   From the team at Nuffield Health, we want to wish Emma the best of luck for her marathon! For further information on resistance training tips for beginners, read our article from National Fitness Assurance Lead, Olivia Tyler here: https://lnkd.in/evfamtak #NuffieldHealth #Resistancetraining #Buildingahealthiernation

We are implementing a new standardised national paediatric early-warning system across our hospitals to further help clinicians spot and treat a deteriorating child patient quickly and act on concerns. NHS England announced in November that its hospitals are rolling out a new early warning system for doctors and nurses treating children to quickly identify deterioration, escalate care, and act on parental concerns. The system, called the National Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS), is a collaboration between NHS England, The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and The Royal College Of Nursing Of The United Kingdom. It allows doctors to track possible deterioration in a child’s condition on a chart, measuring blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels and levels of consciousness, with different scores representing the level of concern. At Nuffield Health, 30 of our 37 hospitals see children and young people with a variety of conditions. While our hospitals already have paediatric early-warning systems in place, this change will provide a single, national standardised process for patients, families, and staff to have a clear way of ensuring issues are detected and escalated rapidly. To find out more and hear the views of Alison McCourt, our Interim Chief Clinical Officer and Jamie Crew, our National Lead for Children and Young People, please read below and visit: https://lnkd.in/efcZuxMB #Buildingahealthiernation #connectedhealthcare #healthcare #hospitals

We couldn’t agree more. 🤝   Last week our partners The Richmond Group of Charities released their latest report, ‘Millions More Moving’. According to our latest Healthier Nation Index findings, 3 in 4 UK adults aren’t achieving their NHS recommendation for moderate exercise each week. With physical inactivity a key risk factor for developing long-term health conditions, the need to get the nation active and moving is urgent.   The report sets out three ‘shifts’ in policy that will help maximise the role of health, including the need to embed movement in healthcare treatment pathways. We fully support this, and believe that the fitness and leisure industry can play a significant role in delivering this.   You can read the full report here: Millions more moving - Richmond Group (https://lnkd.in/dyTKWfjf

Our nation’s health is in a precarious state, yet one effective and inexpensive solution is too often ignored: helping people with long-term conditions to move more. The time to act is now. Our new report outlines the change that can get millions moving. https://lnkd.in/eBEwcZWX
