About us

Without water, life can't flow smoothly. Ofwat is the economic regulator of the water sector, and we’re working to improve life through water: keeping water flowing, bills affordable and helping to ensure the health of our rivers and waterways. We're here to ensure water companies do the right thing: supporting customers and communities, improving the environment, and making sure our water supplies are secure for future generations. Our work involves overseeing water company performance, driving water companies to meet long term challenges through increased collaboration and partnership, and pushing water companies to deliver more for customers, society and the environment.

🏆 Breakthrough Winner Spotlight: Local Regeneration of Granular Activated Carbon 🏆 Led by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, with partners including Industrie DeNora, Panton McLeod, Swansea University, Uisce Éireann Irish Water and a number of other water companies, this project will investigate different ways to regenerate Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) locally reducing both financial and carbon costs.  GAC is used to remove organics, such as pesticides and taste and odour compounds. GAC needs to be regenerated thermally, typically every 3 years, which is both costly and carbon intensive. 🏆Breakthrough Winner Spotlight: Developing a market-based approach to deliver SuDS through street works 🏆 Thames Water and Greater London Authority are working together on a project that incentivises utility companies to refill some of the 165,000 holes they dig in London every year with 'sustainable drainage systems' (such as raingardens). These will reduce strain on drains from rainwater, create a greener city and also protect London from the growing flooding risk in the city.
