🌊 Flooding cost the UK £333 million in economic losses between November 2019 and March 2020. There are many data sources available to improve flood prediction and disaster mitigation but organisations face constraints imposed by limitations of classical compute. One way to generate more accurate and efficient flood risk assessment and management was explored in a recent technical feasibility study where, using our quantum computer, Multiverse Computing and Moody's Corporation explored more sophisticated techniques for flood prediction and disaster mitigation. These types of studies could pave the way for more accurate and efficient flood risk assessment and management in the future. Our team had a great time at DEF CON 32 ☠️ As always, Hacker Jeopardy was a highlight of the event, alongside attending some debates at the ‘Bloch Party’, specifically those on quantum hype and career success in quantum, which the team found particularly interesting. Thank you to all those who attended our talk on Friday, ‘Quantum DevOps!’, presented by our DevOps engineers: Tom Winchester and Kristian Balog. It was great to see the buzz around Quantum Village and we were delighted to provide access to our quantum device, for the third year running, for Quantum Village's CTF event. This year we provided access to our latest device: OQC Toshiko Gen-1, on which we saw over 200 tasks run by DEF CON attendees on the last day of the event alone! A big thank you to Quantum Village (particularly Victoria Kumaran and Mark Carney) and kudos to the members of our team who provided back office support and encouragement during the event: Todd Tilma, Arputharaj David, Martin Millmore and Jamie Friel! 0️⃣ What is superposition? 1️⃣ Superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics that gives quantum computing a unique advantage. In classical compute, a ‘bit’ can either be in a 0 or a 1, but a qubit can be a 0,1 or any linear combination of the two. Their ability to be in multiple states simultaneously is what is called superposition: the mathematical combination of both 0 and 1. This takes us away from the classical idea of a piece of data being binary and towards the idea of a distribution of possibilities.
