One major challenge highlighted in our white paper is a common question EV drivers face each time they start a charging session: "What’s going on with pre-authorisation?" Pre-authorisation involves reserving a certain amount of money on your payment card before the charge is processed. This approach ensures payment in advance, protecting against unpaid bills. However, the amount reserved can vary widely—from as little as £1 to as much as £60—and drivers often don’t know the exact figure until it appears on their bank statement. Our research indicates that while drivers are generally not opposed to pre-authorisation, they find it confusing. Today, we address the third challenge highlighted in our latest white paper: "Will my payment go through?" Our research reveals a surprising frequency of problems at the charge point. A striking 87% of drivers have downloaded a new app at the charge point at least once, with 19% reporting that they have to do this frequently. Additionally, a significant 40% of drivers have experienced card rejections either occasionally or frequently. These numbers are concerning, but there are solutions. 1. Mitigate payment issues: Design software solutions that minimise the risk of valid card rejections or the need for a PIN. 2. Offer backups: Provide alternative payment options, such as pay-by-text or other card validation methods. 3.
