Did you hear the news? Last week, in partnership with Edge Hill University, Glass Futures, leading growers, and renowned manufacturers, we launched the Greenhouse Innovation Consortium (GIC) to unlock the full potential of controlled environment horticulture and improve food production in the UK. The UK is currently heavily reliant on food imports from abroad, with 80% of fruit and over half of vegetables being imported, but through the GIC, we aim to improve this by tackling key challenges under a common goal: to accelerate innovation and propel the industry forward. Spearheaded by Dr Sven Batke (Reader in Plant Science at Edge Hill University), the GIC will be, alongside many other activities, developing and testing cutting edge technologies to enhance crop quality, yield, and resilience, and helping growers to improve resource use and develop more sustainable practices. Dr. Anna Colley from Pilkington UK explains: "We recently launched Pilkington Botanical™, a dedicated greenhouses glass range, that has been designed to help growers to optimise the light growing environment in their greenhouses. We are delighted to share that we have been shortlisted in the edie Net-Zero Awards for the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ category, with our submission celebrating the efforts we have made across Pilkington UK and NSG Group to make𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚™ in decarbonisation and sustainability. Our people have been driving forward a number of initiatives in different parts of the business, including the development and launch of Pilkington 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗶™, our 52% lower embodied carbon glass, and the moving of our rolled glass line from Watson Street to Greengate, saving 15,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. Alongside NSG Group's Science Based Target Initiative and supply chain charter, extensive range of Environmental Product Declarations, and CDP rating upgrading to A-, we’ve also seen more great work at our Greengate site in St Helens with a European-first carbon capture trial and green hydrogen production plans. We’re really proud of the progress we have made so far, but we know we still have a long way to go. Today saw some of the team heading to Liverpool to take part in our first Pride march. Earlier this month, we were pleased to see Rory Back, R&D Incubator Technical Manager, invited to be part of the adjudication panel for the 'Energy' category at the Royal Society of Chemistry's Emerging Technologies Competition for the third time. Held at Burlington House in London, the event showcased the latest in novel technologies from exciting chemistry-related startups. Rory said: “At Pilkington UK / NSG Group we are at the forefront of innovation in our sector, and the Emerging Technologies Competition offers an excellent opportunity to encounter pioneering developments that could be used in glass applications. I relished being part of the adjudication panel for the ‘Energy’ category, which saw 'H2Upgrade' of the University of Cambridge crowned winners, from a group of high quality finalists.” #RSCEmergingTech #innovation
