Save the Children Save the Children is the world's leading independent organisation for children. We work in around 120 countries. Our vision is to live in a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. Last year Save the Children's programmes and campaigns reached more than 55 million children directly around the world, through our and our partners' work. We work to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. Across all of our work, we pursue several core values: accountability, ambition, collaboration, creativity and integrity.

"It's not what it used to be. I dream that the war will end so that we can go to school and learn", Anton*, 11, from Mykolaiv. After over 2 years of war, about two-thirds of children in the frontline regions of #Ukraine can still not attend school in person due to the danger of air strikes and shelling. At least 3,000 educational institutions have been damaged and more than 300 destroyed during the war, comprising more than 10% of Ukraine’s schools. Read our new report that reveals the dramatic impact the war has had on education in Ukraine ⬇

  • Children’s mental health in #Gaza is being pushed beyond breaking point. The harm inflicted on children after 10 months of siege, relentless bombardment and lack of basics like food and water, is unimaginable💔 We need a #CeasefireNow, and safe humanitarian access to reach and assist children in need. All children deserve to grow up feeling safe. #StopTheWarOnChildren #mentalheath

  • Gaza has recorded its first polio case in 25 years ⚠ Polio is a virus that can cause irreversible paralysis in a matter of hours. It is particularly dangerous in Gaza, where high malnutrition rates and toxic stress levels make children more vulnerable to infection. 💔 But with the destruction of the healthcare system and little to no wash and sanitation facilities, people in Gaza are not capable to respond to this outbreak, posing a huge risk for children. 🤝 We have joined forced with 20 agencies and 20 medical professionals to call for an immediate and definitive ceasefire to allow life-saving aid into #Gaza, including polio vaccines to be administered to 640,000 children under 10. ❌ Without immediate action, an entire generation is at risk of infection and hundreds of children face paralysis by a highly communicable disease that can be prevented with a simple vaccine. • "I live everyday gripped by the fear that today might be the day I lose a family member, a colleague, a child I’ve been supporting, or even my entire family in a single airstrike." Every day thousands of aid workers like Dr. Jamal put their life on the line to protect children. We must protect them ❤️ We will continue to demand for an immediate and definitive ceasefire in #Gaza. It is the only way to protect the lives of humanitarian workers and civilians. • 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers. 2024 is on track to be even worse ⚠ Despite international laws in place to protect them, they continue to be killed, injured and abducted. These facts lay bare a glaring truth: The world is failing humanitarian workers and, by extension, the people they serve. This failure of humanity, responsibility and leadership cannot be allowed to continue. This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we are demanding an end to these violations and the impunity with which they're committed. Together with 412 NGOs we are calling Member States of the UN General Assembly to protect civilians, including our staff. • A public health emergency has been declared by the World Health Organization over a new outbreak of #mpox⚠️ Children are at higher risk than adults of contracting the virus - with 70% of DRC’s 14,901 cases in children under 15 – and almost four times more likely to die. We know from decades of experience that it is the most vulnerable children who will be worse off - like undernourished children and those living in crowded refugee camps with limited access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene. ➡️ In DRC, Save the Children is responding to the mpox outbreak in North Kivu and South Kivu through water, sanitation and health services support, including providing PPE and training leaders in engagement, communication, and community alert systems for identifying and reporting suspected cases. The outbreak is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis, with over 7 million people displaced, primarily due to conflict and a collapsed health system.    ➡️ We are also working with the national government in Burundi on a national response plan to the rising number of infections. 🔇 It is critical that authorities and donors ramp up control measures, especially efforts to get vaccines to those who need them, in order to save children’s lives.

  • "Nothing prepares you for what it's actually like to be in Gaza." Becky Platt is a paediatric nurse who has been treating injured children in a field hospital in Gaza for Save the Children. In this harrowing account, she speaks about the devastating impact of the war in #Gaza on children. Read in her own words👉 https://bit.ly/3LTTdVU ---- Becky is a British paediatric nurse from The Royal London Hospital and a senior lecturer in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Queen Mary University in London.
