    Stop tracking email open rates. 🛑 Lots of talk about Gmails new banner blocking auto image downloads recently however this is not a new problem. Optimising campaigns for open rates is worse than a vanity exercise - it’s misleading and unreliable. Here’s why… Open tracking relies on an invisible image (a tracking pixel) embedded in your email. When the email is opened, the image loads, logging the open… But it’s not that simple. That pixel can also collect data like IP addresses, locations, and browser details, raising significant privacy concerns. As a result, major players like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have taken action to protect user privacy. Let’s take Gmail as an example: Since the introduction of Google’s privacy measures, reported open rates have been significantly inflated. Many of these “opens” are triggered by Google’s servers rather than genuine recipient engagement. Check out the data 📈 Chart 1: Compares open rates for Gmail against other providers like Microsoft and Proofpoint. Notably, Gmail’s open rates have consistently been higher, with a significant spike after 2018. Chart 2: Focuses on “first-minute opens” likely caused by image preloading or security scanning.     Buyer intent data is a waste of money. Specifically third-party intent data - there are plenty of vendors, most of us know the big ones. Sure, it's a compelling proposition, knowing companies that are looking for solutions in your space...but it's all just too much smoke and mirrors. Why? Because the data is too late (information decays literally by the minute) or too broad (customers searching for marketing solutions is a pretty wide net). But at a more fundamental level, even if the data was perfect, it's simply too late to try and insert yourself into the buying cycle. ➡ In B2B, buyers spend more time researching, with more stakeholders than ever before (11% now have up to 6-9). You need to be on their radar before this research phase starts, rather than trying to join the conversation when the decision is already halfway made. So what works instead? - Accurate TAM targeting and multi-channel engagement: Get smart with your Total Addressable Market (TAM) targeting and engage prospects through multiple channels. This way, you’ll connect with the right people and keep your brand top of mind. - First-party intent data: Pay attention to signals from your own website and social media. When someone shows interest, you’ll be the first to know and can act on it quickly. - Real time engagement: Start conversations with real-time interactions like web chat or personalised emails. This helps you make genuine connections and respond to interest right when it happens. Conclusion: Instead of relying on third-party data at the last minute, focus on building relationships early.     A few months ago, I hesitated to share something important to me. In the first photo, I’m standing in front of the Lead Rate Wall of Fame - my first time on it after a lot of hard work for my clients. I almost didn’t post it because I didn’t want to come off as bragging. So, I kept the moment to myself. Fast forward to the second photo, and the wall’s updated with new faces, including mine. When my colleagues joked that my picture might soon cover the whole wall, I felt a bit embarrassed and said everyone deserves recognition for their hard work. Here’s what I’ve learned: it’s okay to be proud of our achievements. Feeling good about our success isn’t the same as bragging. It’s about recognizing the effort we’ve put in and the results we’ve achieved. So, I’m learning to embrace my accomplishments and celebrate them.
