We were delighted to welcome Aoife from Dublin to join our engineering team at Swinton Technology for a valuable work experience opportunity. During her time with us, Aoife had the chance to delve into areas beyond the scope of her regular school curriculum. Immersed in our dynamic environment, she engaged in a range of tasks, including pre-power inspection, control panel hardware assessment, and hands-on tasks such as wiring a PLC, and some mechanical fitting. She also gained practical experience in fibre cabling disassembly and testing, contributed to product database management, mastered the setup of logic gates, conducted comprehensive panel and field device testing, and executed functionality assessments. Leonie Coombes was Aoife's mentor during her time at ST, and she says, 'It was a pleasure to work with Aoife during her time with us—she showed great insight and understanding of some complex engineering concepts, and I have every confidence she'll excel at anything she sets her mind to. Hopefully, we will see her in the future as a fully qualified engineer!' Reflecting on her experience, Aoife expressed a newfound enthusiasm for engineering, stating, 'I am now sure of my decision to pursue engineering studies at university.' Did you know yesterday was National Creativity Day? At Sensia, we are proud to have so many talented individuals among us, and today we’re thrilled to showcase some incredible photos from Nick Lawson, a project engineer and an exceptionally skilled photographer. Not only does Nick capture stunning images, but he also constructs some of his impressive equipment himself! How does he achieve such breathtaking photos? Nick shared, “Basically, it’s a 16" F4.5 telescope with a 406mm aperture and 1828mm focal length. My primary camera is a specialized astrophotography APSC size, cooled to around -10°C. It is fully computerized: it takes an image, platesolves to determine its orientation, then moves to the target, auto focuses, locks on, and tracks the target. You can leave it taking exposures for hours as it follows the object. It’s a blend of gear, including a lot of DIY, some of my own software, and various third-party software. I remote desktop in to check on its progress. I'm a member of the Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomy Society and recently rejoined the committee. I also helped build the observatories in Dalby Forest years ago." The Northern Lights photos were taken by Nick in North Yorkshire, using a mobile phone! Nick doesn't think that these are his best work, as the sighting was unexpected while he was out with his large telescope attempting to image distant galaxies and nebulae. To round off Mental Health Awareness Month, we are proud to share the significant steps we have taken to support our team. This month, 14 delegates from all four Sensia UK locations attended a two-day Mental Health First Aider training course at our Tunbridge Wells facility. These delegates will now serve as a focal point to support our teams with their mental health wellbeing in the UK. Also on Thursday, May 16, to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, all four Sensia UK locations participated in #WearItGreenDay, raising vital awareness of the impact of mental health on everyone. During the holy month of Ramadan, our team in Abu Dhabi got together for Iftar. An occasion often shared by family and friends, and in our case colleagues, too.
