NEW MAKERS · Rosie Stonham It was during her master's degree at the Royal College of Art that New Maker for 2024 Rosie Stonham started working with glass. She designed homewares at a desk for a few years following her degree, before revisiting her practice because she wanted to once again be "connected with the material and to experiment in real-time.” Her experiments have led her to explore ideas of consciousness, and the glass vessels she has created for TOAST are designed to hold liquid, subtly mimicking the role of membranes in the body. “I found it fascinating that our immaterial inner life was generated by the material of our bodies,” she explains. “I created a series of objects to reflect a fantasy imagining of the surfaces and textures within us.” Learn more about Rosie's work and shop her pieces on the TOAST Magazine → https://buff.ly/3xsgniA Words Bébhinn Campbell Photography by Safia Shakarchi.

SERVING COMFORTING COMBINATIONS · Chef Nicholas Balfe Chef and owner of HOLM Nicholas Balfe elegantly reimagines the comforting foods of his childhood for the guests at his restaurant with rooms in Somerset. “Nostalgia is a real driver for me,” he admits. “For me, a good dish is a transportive dish.” In 2012, after working in London restaurants for a few years, Nicholas opened Salon in Brixton with two business partners. The success of Salon meant that the trio subsequently opened two more inherently urban eateries, Levan and Larry's. By 2021 Nicholas felt the urge to move out of London, and opening HOLM in South Petherton has allowed him embrace an honest, holistic approach to hospitality. For the TOAST Magazine Nicholas shares a recipe for Pan-Seared Trout with Spring Vegetables & Brown Butter Sabayon. Find the recipe and learn more about the approach behind HOLM → https://buff.ly/4ajYyQp Nicholas wears the TOAST Unstructured Cotton Linen Blazer and Alfie Garment Dyed Herringbone Trousers. Kate Semple · New Makers “It was a really difficult time, but clay kind of carried me through it. It was like this positive energy.” It was during lockdown that Kate Semple started working with clay, as a source of comfort and escapism whilst she was caring for her mother. Four years on, and she now works with the material full time. Using pinching, coiling and slab-building techniques, Kate appreciates that all she needs to create beautiful objects are clay and her bare hands. For the TOAST New Makers programme Kate has created five vessels, ranging from a small bowl to a large vase. RURAL HOURS · The Country Lives of Three Pioneering Writers Harriet Baker’s new book, Rural Hours, tells the story of three very different women, each of whom moved to the countryside and was transformed by the experience. In 1917, Virginia Woolf arrives at Asheham, on the Sussex Downs, immobilised by nervous exhaustion and creative block. Thirteen years later, feeling jittery about her writing career, Sylvia Townsend Warner spots a modest workman’s cottage for sale on the Dorset coast. And in 1941, Rosamond Lehmann settles in a Berkshire village, seeking a lovers’ retreat, a refuge from war, and a means of becoming ‘a writer again’. Read an extract of Harriet's new book on the TOAST Magazine. Photography by Sophie Davidson.

AMONG THE ELEMENTS · Lopez Island Ana Zautke and Lissa Snapp, founders of lifestyle store Ship Supply, were raised on Lopez Island and now run their business there. The small island has a year-round population of around 2,500 people and is off the north-west coast of Washington, about an hour’s boat ride from Canada and reachable only by ferry. “Perhaps due to the remote and rural nature of our home, our community prioritised travel. We were both exposed to adventures near and far.” Through Ship Supply, founded in 2018, Ana and Lissa celebrate functional pieces that are beautiful and sustainably made. Lissa is the daughter of a shipwright and Ana spent time working on fishing vessels in her early twenties, and so the primary inspiration for the shop has always been the sea. CORTONA · Preserving Tuscan Ceramic Traditions “I was inspired by the charm of the people, the countryside, the architecture, the food and the colours.” When Canadian artist Jennifer Perez visited Tuscany ten years ago she didn't expect to meet her partner and go on to build a life in a hillside commune as a result. After years of living in Cortona and being inspired by its Medieval streets and artisans, Jennifer decided to launch a ceramics brand, Ivo Angel. She partners with potters from Cortona and its neighbouring villages, many of which were born into families of artisans and use techniques that have been passed down through generations. THE NATURE OF BAKING · Lucie Franc de Ferriere Nestled in Manhattan's East Village, From Lucie is a gem atop gum-covered concrete. New York-based baker Lucie Franc de Ferriere credits her upbringing in the French countryside as influencing her namesake business. "When people think of France, they think of Paris. I'm giving them the south of France - it's a feeling people get when they walk in." Through unique flavours and decorative flowers, Lucie draws from nature in her baking. "I grew up with cakes that used vegetables from the garden, like zucchini, carrot, or more herbal ingredients. I prioritise what I can find at the market." Lucie works seasonally, changing the bakery's menu to incorporate timely florals, foliage, fruits, and vegetables. Once she's built the physical part of the cake, her creativity can flourish — and her process is often intuitive.
