Über uns

Women in Rail (WR), a charity founded in 2012, comprises men and women from the UK railway sector, working together alongside major stakeholders in the industry to support the development, promotion and attraction of women in the UK railway sector and, more broadly, improve gender balance, equality, diversity and inclusion in rail. WR holds regular networking events and development workshops across the UK through its 8 regional groups and runs a very successful cross-industry mentoring programme where both female and male mentees receive guidance from more senior industry professionals to support them in their professional development, personal growth and confidence. WR currently has 5,000 members representatives of all grades and roles and a wide range of companies within the UK rail industry. WR’s head office is in London with regional groups across the UK including Scotland, North West, Yorkshire, Wales, West Midlands, East Midlands, London and the South West. Membership of Women in Rail is free. To find out more about the Charity and to sign up to become a member, visit: http://womeninrail.org/

Today Women in Rail held the first of our #SAHM collaborations with Transport for London’s Sikh network and Network Rail’s Multifaith network. 🚆🛤️ We welcomed Rav Singh, Sikh historian, researcher, curator for the Royal Palaces and founder of A Little History of the Sikhs, a community initiative. Now this was special! Why? 🤷🏽♀️ The cities and communities that are connected by rail reveal a wealth of Sikh, Anglo-Sikh and Punjab history. Rav Singh with his invaluable historical insight took us through a unique virtual journey across the regional rail network sharing lesser known stories and hidden history. 🪯 Did you know? 📚Henrietta Melvina Hodges buried at Kelvedon Hatch (Brentwood, Essex) was the third wife of Rajah Randhar Singh of Kapurthala (1859). Her father was the head writer at Ludhiana, Punjab and tutor to Rajah Randhar Singh. 📚Rani Henrietta’s daughter Princess Helen entered into London High Society, becoming a controversial figure and modelled for artist Edwin Longsden Long in risqué poses - scandalous in her time! 📚Bhai Ram Singh was invited by Queen Victoria to Osbourne House in Isle of Wight to design her new tea room - the Durbar Room in 1911 after which he was made a MVO (Member of the Royal Victorian Order) 📚During WW1 The Royal Pavilion in Brighton was converted into a military hospital for Indian soldiers to accommodate the various faiths and their cultural needs. 📚The Flying Sikh book tells the story of the only Sikh airman to fly in WW1 after starting a new life studying in Oxford. A huge show of appreciation to Rav Singh who shared so much more than the handful of stories mentioned above. 📖 You can access the presentation on the Women in Rail website: https://lnkd.in/eaVtcqpM Thanks to colleagues from at least 17 organisations who joined the session and engaged. 🙏🏽 To learn more follow A Little History of the Sikhs website https://lnkd.in/eXqdwqxz and on Linkedin https://lnkd.in/eeCCj6jw #SikhandPunjabHistory #HiddenHistory #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #FreeToBeMe

South Asian Heritage Month is a celebration of the impact of South Asian cultures, histories, and communities on the United Kingdom. The month spans two key dates in South Asian history -18th July, when the Indian Independence Act 1947 gained royal assent from King George VI, to 17th August, when the Radcliffe Line was published in 1947, marking the borders between India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Events for our programmes focus on celebrating diversity in all forms, through dance, spoken word, poetry, music, film and other media. We have celebrated South Asian heritage through performances by The Bollywood Co. who have regularly featured in our Women in Rail events and aim to showcase Bollywood dance and other Indian dance styles in their truest, most authentic forms. Here is a snippet from one of their performances! #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM #Dance Rajinder Pryor MBE ( ਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਰ )
