We're delighted to welcome a new Global Head of Aerospace, Space and Defence to the BSI leadership team. Giancarlo Silvestri, PGDip, ATPL (A), MRAeS. brings a wealth of expertise with over 20 years of experience in civil aviation and 6,000+ hours of jet time as a pilot. In recent years he's collaborated as a Policy Specialist at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, Future Aviation Technologist at a UK innovation accelerator firm and more recently as Regulatory Affairs Manager for an Advanced Air Mobility infrastructure company based in London. Commenting on the move, Giancarlo said: 💬 "I'm thrilled to join BSI as Global Head of Aerospace, Space and Defence (Assurance). I have a particular interest in innovation and unblocking regulatory barriers to enable the safe and sustainable implementation of new technologies. I'm extremely passionate about sustainability, electric aviation, SAF and hydrogen, and I'm currently representing BSI as a liaison member for International Aerospace Environmental Group ® (IAEG). As we welcome a new era of Aerospace, Space and Defence at BSI we'll continue to deliver excellence and best practices to enable the safe transition to a more sustainable future flight industry." 60% of respondents would feel safe if future flight technologies meet internationally recognized standards, according to a recent Future Flight Challenge Survey funded by UK Research and Innovation. This was second in importance only to regulatory approvals. The survey results highlight the critical role of standards in building public trust and securing a social license for innovations like drones and advanced air mobility. We’re working with UKRI and industry to create a roadmap with key priorities for new standards in the future flight arena, focusing on UAS and eVTOL pathways. Chris Gee, Head of Aviation at BSI shares a key takeaway from this weeks Farnborough International Airshow: It's fantastic to see the level of Government support and engagement at Farnborough, including Mike Kane, Aviation, Maritime, and Security Minister opening the Global Urban & Advanced Air Summit (GUAAS). We've seen significant progress in Advanced Air Mobility since Farnborough two years ago and aviation innovation continues to accelerate at pace. Mike’s opening speech highlighted the key aviation priorities for the new Government: ✈ Unlocking the benefits of drones – there are huge productivity and efficiency benefits that can be realised from accelerating the adoption of drones more widely across industry. 🛩 Sustainable aviation – confirmation that the SAF mandate will be introduced in 2025, enabling the pathway towards net zero aviation. 🚀 Airspace modernisation – publication of part 3 of the Airspace Modernisation Strategy setting out a technical deployment roadmap to evolve airspace for new forms of aviation. #Aerospace #AdvanceAirMobility #FutureFlight #NetZero #Standards
