BENTONVILLE, Ark., June 27, 2024 — Building on Walmart’s long history supporting communities when natural disasters hit, today the company is sharing the next steps in its efforts to draw on its strengths as a retailer with roots in thousands of communities to help them better prepare and quickly respond when disasters strike.

Walmart Foundation today announced three new grants in the states of Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal with the aim to empower smallholder farmers through the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) framework. This includes grants of USD 1.7 million to ACCESS Development Services for economic empowerment and income enhancement of farmers in Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, USD 1.09 million to SRIJAN to improve the lives of small and marginal farmers and promote women as rural entrepreneurs, and USD 1.1 million to Action for Social Advancement (ASA) to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, both in Madhya Pradesh. These projects are anticipated to reach 39 FPOs and over 60,000 smallholder farmers.

Walmart provided a grant to the team at RoadTrip Nation to host a webinar and develop a toolkit focused on helping organizations create compelling stories that highlight systemic issues and drive narrative change.

New Delhi, India, Nov. 30, 2022: The Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition (TCI) is embarking on the next phase of its project to support smallholder farmers in India through the promotion of effective farmer producer organization (FPO) models. The centerpiece of this effort is the further development of TCI’s Hub for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) within its Center of Excellence in New Delhi, a web-based platform that empowers FPOS, researchers and other stakeholders to access comprehensive information on thousands of FPOs launched in 2021 in India.

On June 5, 2020, I sat at my desk and watched as Doug McMillon made a commitment to use Walmart’s scale and resources to address the drivers of systemic racism in society and accelerate change in the national social systems. Growing up, I saw that each father, brother, sister or mother who entered the criminal justice system signified a loss for my community. One more person in the criminal justice system meant one fewer person who would graduate from college, start their career, raise their children or discover their talent. Each loss of a family member, friend and coworker dealt a blow to the community’s potential.

But growing up in a mixed-race family on the U.S.-Mexico border, I also saw firsthand the numerous barriers to opportunity within the education system – particularly for Black and African Americans.
