MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (WJRT) - A student-led club on the campus of Central Michigan University is leading the way in providing weather forecasts for the campus and the Mount Pleasant community.

The Mid-Mitten Weather View is helping meteorology students gain valuable forecasting skills. while also giving people the information they need.

The group was founded in 2021 and stemmed from a simple request from CMU Athletics asking for forecasts for their baseball games.

Now, Mid-Mitten Weather View forecasts for campus landscaping operations as well as other CMUU sports teams.

And the members even forecast for Mount Pleasant's Morning Sun newspaper each week.

One of the founding members was our very own meteorologist Isaac Cleland -- a proud CMU Chip!

Isaac said the group opened up an opportunity for meteorology students to work together and learn together.

Senior Josh Sherman said the club has helped him hone his skills and accuracy and that the best part for him is helping the community be prepared.

"Forecasting is a thing where you have to like practice it over and over and get that repetition, it's always a good thing to get through the club and providing forecasts for the public and I feel like it has improved my skills a lot. Being able to translate what you've learned from the class to the club is always a very important thing. It kind of gives you more tools in a sense to look and provide more accurate forecasts," Sherman said.

Mid-Mitten Weather View has about 25 members and is an official student organization.

The group hopes to expand their reach even further in the future.
