State supreme court allows dam failure lawsuits to move forward

The Michigan state Supreme Court has denied a request from the state that would dismiss lawsuits related to the collapse of the Edenville and Sanford dam failures.

MICHIGAN (WJRT) - The Michigan Supreme Court denied the state's latest attempt to have lawsuits related to the 2020 Mid-Michigan floods dismissed from court.

With this decision, the lawsuits are back on their path toward trial.

In May of 2020, the Edenville Dam broke open and the Sanford Dam failed causing flooding in surrounding areas.

The water caused millions of dollars in damage to properties in Gladwin, Midland and Saginaw Counties.

A final report released last year found the dam failure could have been prevented if different actions had been taken by the dam's owner and operators.
