Deadly crash

A 57-year-old man from Higgins Lake died sometime overnight after he crashed an ATV along Old U.S. 27.

ROSCOMMON COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - A 57-year-old was found dead along a rural Roscommon County roadway early Monday hours after police say he crashed into a ditch.

The Roscommon County Sheriff's Office says Kevin Lee Barnes of Higgins Lake was riding an off-road vehicle north on Old 27 near Myrtle Avenue sometime overnight, when he hit an obstruction on the shoulder.

The impact sent Barnes careening off the road, threw him off the ATV and he hit a tree. A passerby found Barnes' body around 5 a.m. lying in the ditch and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Barnes may have been intoxicated and traveling at an excessive speed when he crashed. The sheriff's office will continue looking into what caused the crash.
