Mid-Michigan crews work to plow snow covered roads

GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - Mid-Michigan road crews battled the conditions Monday morning, clearing nearly 3 inches of snow from the roads.

Brian Behnae has been plowing roads for the Genesee County Road Commission for the last four years. He said that this is just the start of what he expects winter to bring.

Behnae said that every snowfall is different and has to be treated differently to keep drivers safe.

"This is a really heavy snow, so it packed down really quick. It's hard. We had to use quite a bit of salt and boost to get it break up," he said.

The Genesee County Road Commission had 11 trucks out at one point, clearing, salting and treating roads from 5 a.m. until after 1 p.m.

"Even if you put salt down, if it starts snowing again, that's all forgotten," said Behnae.

He said that plowing the roads can be dangerous, so he does what he can to keep himself and others out of harm's way.

"There's always some people that are really in a hurry, so I just try to let them get by me and try to stay safe," said Behnae.

Of course, the road commission trucks weren't the only crews out Monday, the Michigan Department Of Transportation has also sent out dozens of plows working to clear roads.

Those who are interested can track their locations and live stream cameras on their trucks to see conditions by using their MI-DRIVE tool on their website.
