The National AIDS Memorial has a mission to inspire new generations of activists in the fight against stigma, denial, and hate for a just future. We strive to make this mission a reality through scholarships for activists, providing the next generation with the tools they need to make a difference in the fields they are passionate about. Here are two scholarships for activists that we offer:

Pedro Zamora Young Leaders ScholarshipS

The Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship is a scholarship for young activists who, like Pedro Zamora, strive to make a difference in the world of health and social justice. These young activists pursue a bold vision: never again will a community be harmed because of fear, silence, discrimination, stigma, or hate.

Mary Bowman Arts in Activism Award

The Mary Bowman Arts in Activism Award is a $5,000 award for activists using art as a powerful tool for community activism and expression. More than just art scholarships, Mary Bowman Arts in Activism Awards support young people regardless of educational background get the support they need to get their message out into the world through art.

LGBTQ Scholarships

The National AIDS Memorial strives for equity across all lines, offering scholarship opportunities for students from all backgrounds, including scholarships for LGBTQ students.

The Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship supports the academic pursuits of young activists working in their communities who carry forward the torch of Pedro Zamora. At the age of 17, Pedro dedicated his life to raising awareness and educating his peers on what they needed to avoid infection, striving to reduce the stigma against HIV+ and LGBTQ+ individuals like himself.

The Mary Bowman Arts in Activism Award is another potential scholarship for LGBTQ students that honors Mary’s legacy and supports other accomplished young and emerging art activists ("artivists") like her. LGBTQ+ art activists are welcome to apply for this $5,000 award, intended to support young and emerging artivists each year who exemplify Mary’s passion for the arts as the vehicle for their own health and social justice community activism and expression. HBCU Scholarships

At the National AIDS Memorial, we strive to offer scholarships to students from all backgrounds, including 10 scholarships for HBCU students last year.

The Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship supports the work of HBCU students and beyond who carry forward the torch of Pedro Zamora, who spent his final years reducing stigma against HIV+ and LGBTQ+ individuals like himself.
