In an attempt to keep up with the rest of the NFC East, the New York Giants made a blockbuster trade for edge rusher Brian Burns this offseason. Not only did the Giants trade multiple draft picks for Burns, but they also made him the third-highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.
Despite New York’s massive commitment, it’s fair to wonder if Burns has officially become overrated at this point. He was an impactful pass rusher for the Panthers, but it’s fair to wonder if he was ever considered elite.
Burns recorded just 40 total pressures in 2023. The Giants certainly hope that he’ll play better moving forward.
2024 NFL season: Predicting each NFC team's MVP | NFL.com
Brian Burns might have been the Panthers’ co-MVP a year ago (with Derrick Brown), and I think he will thrive on a Giants defense that features an emerging Kayvon Thibideaux on the opposite edge and an established Dexter Lawrence in the middle. This offense lost Saquon Barkley, still has OL issues to iron out -- and there’s that curious QB situation to figure out. New York isn't likely to be winning games 38-35.
If the Giants are going to surprise people this season, the defensive line likely will have to be a big reason why. The Burns trade and extension felt like one of the savviest fell swoops of the entire offseason. Some teams might not have viewed Burns with the same reverence because of his solid but hardly eye-popping sack numbers, but the tape reveals a consistently disruptive edge capable of earning All-Pro honors in New York.
Giants' Jalin Hyatt has been relying on a kid's snack to help him gain weight this offseason | CBSSports.com
"PB&J's was one of my biggest things, because you want to eat your full meal," Hyatt continued. "You don't want to eat a little bit and drink a protein shake. Then you're not really getting anything. So, for myself, finishing, completing your full meals, and then, an hour later or 30 minutes later, that's when you put in an Uncrustables or a PB&J or a little protein shake."

In the secondary, all the linebackers and defensive backs were excited to have their eyes on the quarterback a lot more than the last two years, when their backs were often to the quarterback playing man-to-man defense. It will allow them to use their instincts and film study to anticipate where the quarterback wants to go with the football and make plays on it.

Underappreciated players on every NFC team | CBSSports.com
Dexter Lawrence is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL and the Giants' best player. A Second Team All-Pro for the second consecutive year, Lawrence had 4.5 sacks and 21 quarterback hits last season.
Those numbers don't tell the whole story. Lawrence got to the quarterback as an interior pass rusher, finishing with 65 pressures and a 15.3% pressure rate (both career highs). He was tied for fourth in the NFL among interior defensive linemen in pressures and pressure rate, as well as being tied for sixth in quarterback hits. One of the game's elite interior linemen, Lawrence is in the first year of a new four-year deal. He has a cap hit of $14,575,776 this year.
