There’s now a local league for that Minecraft game that your kids are obsessed with

Players can compete in four different movie theaters around Massachusetts.

Is your child addicted to a thing called “Minecraft?’’ Don’t worry, your kid is not alone. In fact, more than 22 million people have bought the infectious computer game since its launch in 2009.

Now, as the game continues to grow more popular, three local movie theaters will be hosting Minecraft leagues this winter, and all are eligible to join. Beginning in February, Super League, a national in-theater video game league, will kick off a four-week season that lets players go face-to-face against friends in a theater auditorium and thousands on a world leaderboard, while also watching the action unfold live on a big screen.

Showcase Cinemas in Revere, Randolph, and Foxboro as well as an AMC Loews in Danvers are four of more than 80 participating theaters across North America. Each week, these locations will host up to 100 players who will play individually and as part of a team. The gameplay will rotate between Minecraft’s “creative’’ and “survival’’ modes. Teams will compete for a national championship, which includes a $15,000 team scholarship.

The leagues at all three Showcase Cinemas begin on February 20, while the AMC Loews league in Danvers begins on February 16. Tickets for the four-week league are $60 per player, with each player also getting a game jersey. For tickets and more information, visit the Super League website.
