Driver flees sobriety checkpoint, leads police on chase from Lawrence to North Andover

A Lawrence man allegedly sped away from a sobriety checkpoint early Sunday, striking a trooper as he fled, prompting police to shoot at the suspect before pursuing him into North Andover where the chase ended with crash.

According to the State Police, troopers pulled over a 2006 Jeep Cherokee around 2:15 a.m. at a Lawrence checkpoint because officers saw a male passenger get out of the vehicle before the driver could be screened by the troopers.

Once pulled over, the driver suddenly accelerated, turned around, and drove at the troopers, clipping one officer in the hand as he sped by, prompting troopers to fire at the vehicle, according to State Police.
