Matthijs de Ligt was furious with his display against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday and he did nothing to make up for it against Germany on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United defender said his performance at the weekend was 'f*****' and he endured another dismal outing in Tuesday's 2-2 draw.

Manager Ronald Koeman gave the defender another chance but he proceeded to help gift the Germans a goal in the first half.

With the Netherlands leading 1-0, De Ligt gave the ball away inside his own half and Deniz Undav went on to capitalise and level the scores.

He didn't cover himself in glory for Germany's second goal either and his side went in trailing 2-1 at the break.

That was the end of De Ligt's evening as he was replaced with Brighton's Jan-Paul van Hecke.

Naturally, fans on social media had plenty to say about the new United signing.

One wrote: 'Everything under control and then such a mistake by Matthijs de Ligt, this is simply unacceptable. I love him but he simply can't get rid of these mistakes in his career and it looks like he never will.'

'De Ligt giving the ball away and it costing Netherlands a goal you say,' another said. 'Shocker from him there.'

Another joked said he had had a 'mare' while one joked that he was the 'Harry Maguire of the Netherlands.

Tearing into his own performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the weekend, De Ligt had said: 'I think you know how I feel, we won but then comes the individual part.

'I should have done better at their second goal, and I know that. I don't really know what happened.. I should have cleared the ball but I kept having doubts during the play. It's just f****d.'

'If this game is a missed opportunity for me? I don't know, I just try to do my best.'

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman admitted De Ligt had made mistakes but insisted it was important not to dwell on them going forward.

'He himself realises that he was in the wrong position.' The former Everton boss explained.

'This should not happen, but mistakes are part of football. I think it is unfair to make a big deal out of it.'

Despite arriving as a marquee signing this summer from Bayern Munich, De Ligt was limited to cameo appearances from the bench in his first two Manchester United games with Erik ten Hag preferring a defensive partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire.

The Dutchman was given a baptism of fire in his first Premier League start at the start of September as Liverpool ran riot in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

Shortly after he was shown a yellow card in the second-half Ten Hag opted to replace his compatriot with Maguire, meaning De Ligt is still yet to play a full 90 minutes for United.
